I have a frog that I raised from a tadpole. I got the tadpole last year in May. The tadpole came from a pond in town. I live in central NJ. It has been in an aquarium all this time. She in now in a 25 gallon aquarium. We have a filter and an air stone. She has a landing pad to sit on and eats large crickets.
My question is: She seems to be swimming upside down at times. She seems healthy and happy (I quess) but it worries me that she is upside down alot.
Is there some thing I need to do?
I do not know what kind of frog she is. She has a whitish speckled belly and is sort of greenish brown and her body is about 2 1/2 to 3" long. I think she became a frog sometime in the fall, maybe late September
I hope someone can help me. I am so worried. Also, I would like to know if these frogs can be taken out of the aquarium and allowed to jump around on the floor?
Thanks
Can you post a photo of the frog? Based on your description, the frog might be a bullfrog or green frog. I've not heard or seen frogs that swim upside down. Can you describe what she's doing more? If she's spending a good amount of time on land and eating well, then I wouldn't worry too much. Semi-aquatic frogs like bullfrogs and green frogs need both land and water areas. Your frog probably could use more land area. It's not a good idea to let her hop around the room because then you'll have to chase her down, she may dry out, or she may get lost or stuck somewhere. Frogs can jump very high. If you happen to have a more terrestrial frog like a leopard frog, they need even more land area versus water.
Enjoy your frog!
Hmm swiming upside down, never heard of frog doing that. Agreed that letting your frog hop around room is a very bad idea. They dry out pretty quickly. Also got remember that frogs dont drink but absord it through there skin. So when your handling a frog or anywhere it goes, The frog can absorb the salts that are on your skin or any cleaning solution etc that has been used on the floor.
Another note from personal experience-When i clean the tank and have to move them out, i do drop them or they jump out when i open lid, I guess from the force from kicking off on the floor or rug for a few min why i try and get them they get brush burns very fast on there back feet. Its not a good idea at all.
You wanna let it hop around then I would take it outside into the yard. Just dont lose it X.x
