Title: Do I Need To Winterize My Pond?
zone9pond - May 2, 2008 11:25 PM (GMT)
hello. I am making a new pond and never had one where it actually could freeze in the winter.
here's the situation.
new pond
1100 gal pond
above ground in old jacuzzi +liner
temp gets below freezing a few times in winter and doesnt las't long that way (no snow, etc)
how should that affect my fish selections (can I have tropicals?)
do i need to worry about getting a deicer? anything else?
thanks for the help in advance

I think you answered some of your own questions.
If it doesn't get below freezing for any length of time, no snow etc, the water doesn't form ice there would be no need for a deicer.
As for tropicals I would think they would have a temp range that they could live in, so it would depend on what tropicals and I would think your pond would be to cold for most of them, but again it depends on what fish you are thinking of having.
The old jacuzzi must have a leak to need a liner right.

Hi zone9pond and welcome to the forum! :)
There are some folks here on the forum that have ponds in very cold weather. I am sure you will get lots of good information if you read some of the posts in this section. I am sure one of them will be happy to give you some tips along with BillBrooks has already given you.

An old Jacuzzi?? Does it still have the insulated cover? Just put that on during the freezing temps. The walls should still be insulated and should take a very long time to cool. At zone 9, I don't think you have to do much winterizing.

I think KK would die of heat prostration in Zone 9! In the "winter!" In shorts!
Bill is right; you won't need a de-icer. You won't really need to winterize much aside from cleaning up plants and regular maintenance.
In Zone 9, you can overwinter some tropicals but not all of them. I think it will be a matter of trial and error for you as it has been for all of us. Each place is different, even in the same climate zone. For example, we live on a hill and get sometimes twice the snow of people 5 miles from us (when it does snow that is thanks to global warming, only snowed once this past winter, normal would be five or six times).
