Title: Fresh Water Sharks?
Description: looking for pet sharks

AbsoluteFrogLover - October 14, 2004 04:58 PM (GMT)
<_< My boyfriend is obsessed with finding fresh water sharks. Right now he just has 3 Balas. Yes, I know they're not really sharks, but that doesn't matter to him. Are there any other types of fresh water sharks or wannabe sharks? B) And if so where would be a good place to find them? Thank you.

The freshwater "sharks" include the bala (or silver), black, iridescent (catfish), red finned, tricolor, and red tailed sharks. Here is a site showing most of these fish:

True sharks are all salt water fish. These freshwater "sharks" are mostly Cyprinids with a few being catfish. Most of these fish grow to around a foot long.

Fish are best obtained from local aquarium stores (not chains) as you can see the condition of the fish. If a particular fish can't be found locally, then there are mail order places for fish. Since I've not used them, I will not comment on which place to use.

i would recomend the red tail and rainbow depending on what tank mates you have and the size tank. They also can live with balas. Tell me your boy friends tank size and what he has in it and i can help you.

if he's getting a shark from the labeo genus (red tail black sharks, rainbow sharks and ruby sharks) make sure he doesen't any fish that puff up. like firemouths, puffers, rams, guppies and gouramis. the shark will chase it around the tank and bully it, but the shark won't kill it.

actually the shark may kill it if they live in a small tank. Never get more than 1 labeo unless they live in a 50+ gallon tank.

red tails are more aggresive than rainbow sharks.

Billy, this thread is kind of done with.
