Title: Mystery Eggs
Description: Need help identifying eggs.

Ok so I have looked all through here trying to figure out on my own what I have in this bowl!

I recently went camping in Salt Fork Lake, Ohio (I live in Columbus, Ohio) and caught some tadpoles for work. I work in child care and my kids loooove to look at animals. So set up a fish bowl with all the normal things you would find in a pond... the algae they were swimming in, some snails, some rocks, mud, and various water plants they were swimming near. Somehow I managed to grab a plant that had eggs attached. It looks as if they are in a clear sack and they are clear eggs. The entire sack is only MAYBE the size of a dime.

I've tried to take a picture but it's so small you can hardly see where it is! I just need to find out so I know they aren't mosquitos or something that will fly out all over the place!

Any help would be great! Thanks! -Katie

The eggs sound too large to be mosquito eggs which float in the water (called mosquito rafts). They might be tree frog eggs if they look like tadpoles inside (now or later). They could also be some kind of insect egg like damselflies if the dots in the egg cells are really tiny. When they hatch, you will know more. They won't fly away right away if they are insects. They will be in a larval form first that lives in the water. That should give you enough time to identify them.

Good luck!

Hi Ktkay,

I recently had clear round gelatinous eggs in my pond slightly smaller than a dime. Turned out to be pond snails . You said there were snails in the water also which might make snail eggs possible.

To get a better idea of what snail eggs look like, check out Robyn's "pond clean-up" photos from about 2 weeks ago. She has a few pics of snail eggs on some pots that were in one of her ponds. Not all snail eggs are the same, so you may want to check out the snail page.

also, once they hatch you will need to use a microscope to see them as they are VERY small and clear. The kiddy kind of microscope is fine...just the viewer part is all you need..
I think i got mine from one of those science stores at the mall. Not a magnifying glass either, it has to be a microscope...

Good Luck

Donna

Thanks a lot for the replies! As long as they aren't going to hatch and fly around the room I don't care what they are!

I can tell the eggs are getting bigger already. I'm really starting to think they are snail eggs. It's so strange - Every time I look in the bowl there are more and more snails. I have no idea where they were hiding! So there are a lot of snails in there now.
