Title: Bamboo In Pond
Description: How well does it do underwater

Marje - May 10, 2008 08:21 PM (GMT)
A local store which sells plants for aquariums is selling small bamboo plants as underwater plants. They seems to be doing well in their aquariums .. in fact they are florishing with very healthy green leaves.

Has anyone here had any experience with bamboo growing underwater in a pond?

Thanks!

I've never tried it. I don't think it would survive long term.

I was thinking about Bamboo also. Robyn why don't you think they would do good?

There is a water bamboo. Regular bamboo, in the wild, would sometimes be on dry land and sometimes be on wet land after say a flood or rainy season. The ones they sell all over the place as "magic bamboo" are normally pieces growing hydroponically. We have one. I got it like 5 years ago. It's still alive but hasn't grown (roots or leaves). A part dies, a new part grows. I think they might grow alright in the pond in a very shallow area. My instincts tell me that they won't grow well long term if totally submerged, especially in deep water. I don't know for sure though.
