Title: Kk Got Some Real Plants!

KoiKrazy - May 17, 2008 05:13 PM (GMT)
Well this is a first for me!!! I went to this fancy smancy garden centre yesterday and they had aquatic plants for sale! I only got three as they were $4 each and I have no clue what they are, LOL. I got those ones as they were the cheapest they had. The prices were truly insane. Water lillies were $40. I think that is a lot anyhow??? I will see how these guys do and get some more soon, I don't know if they spread or what they do. I need to do a google search and see if I can find them. Anyhow, I feel "cool" now that I have plants too, :P

KK got some pond plants! :) Are you going to put them in the tiered ponds for now?

We have a little water garden shop here in our small town, and they sell waterlilies for around $20.
Not long ago Derrick mentioned that it was not uncommon for prices in Canada to be twice what we, south of you, pay.
The tropicals are about $35 here. Both are sold in the one or two gallon buckets filled with dense soil.

If you post a picture maybe we can help identify the plant(s) that you got. ^_^

I googled it and it is water hyacinth. I have it in the tiered pond (aka the tacky pond) It looks nice in there, better than all the fake stuff, LOL. I wouldn't mind spening more money on the plants, I just don't know how they will do here so I will start slow I guess.

Did you get other plants KK or just the tropical water hyacinth? There are some hardy plants you could get that you could overwinter inside. I've never been able to keep water hyacinth alive indoors over the winter.

Water hyacinth if conditions are right, full sun and warm temperatures, spread by off shoot stems that grow roots and can be separated into new floating plants. Your Koi will eat the roots and kill them if you allow them to. I usually buy three each year 2.50 each by the end of June I have to start throwing them in the compost heap because they keep reproducing.

Thanks for the tips! I didn't put the water hyacinth in with the koi, just the goldies and shubunkins. I am going to get some barley bales at that garden centre tomorrow, so I will grab a few more plants :D I got another shubunkin today to replace Herb the suicide jumper. I got a pure silver one with a long tail with black streakes in it. It's the one my Mom wanted so I suprised her with it today. She named it Spider???????? Ya weird I know, LOL I don't care for Shubunkins, but she likes them so I humour her! This one is very different though.

I just tossed my water hyacinth in the pond and let it float, but I have seen/heard some people planting it with success. I put mine in on Wed. and already have a nice purple flower on it and another one coming. I wish my lilies would get going though as I need the shade, water covering. Nice bright, pee soup green water in all this sun!! :D

A belated congrats on your new plant! I paid as much as $25 smackers for a lilly. I really had to think about it before I bought i5 but am glad I did as it is a beauty. Lillies are spendy but so is a carton of smokes. I would rather have the plant.

KK, I got a water lily at WalMart a couple of years ago and it blooms every summer and the price was under $10. It is really pretty.

I got some stuff from a woman on american ponders. A Cherokee Lily, an Attraction Lily, an a Jean Marie Lily, a bog bean, pickerel weed, a couple of water iris and a ragged robin for $14 postage. Only problem is there are only a few Canadian people trading plants there, and can't really go back and forth across the boarder.
