Title: Still Green Water

 Just can't seem to clear it up. Can't see my fish! Unless they come to top.
My pondwater also gets real warm in summer. How can I handle this problem? it is under three river birch trees and get sun and shade. But here in Mississippi it gets to 103 and higher in summer... I had about 600 gallon pond..

Ok help me remember. What do you have for a filter? Are you using barley? Have you tested your levels? How much many hours of sun do you have on the pond in a day do you think? My pond is fairly clear except for the meds that I used but we haven't had much hot weather yet.

The natural way is to have at least 50% surface coverage of floating plants to compete with the suspended algae. The more plants that compete with the algae the quicked your water will clear. Limit the nutrients entering the pond such as rotting tree leaves or anything that adds nitrogen to your water is not good. How old is your pond the first year is the most difficult for control of this problem. Once your pond cyles and the plants grow it should cure itself be patient or invest some big bucks in a UV.

This pond I have had 4 years. I am the person that had trouble with the city water..the first 3 years no problems till last spring..Evrythng time I added water I lost all my fish no matter how I treated it..Then I found out my city water is low PH and was told to put some baking soda in it...Even when I water my plants I have to be careful...I have had ponds for the last ten years in other places we lived and I have never checked the PH in my water till now. I was frying the poor things..Finally got the water right and have fish and babies...I wish I could do a 50% water change but scared to try it I don't know what I am going to do this summer when the water level drops because no rain.....My water is so pretty and clear in winter time but the minute it heats up it turns green.. What kind of plants do I need to cover the top of water..I have a water lily but it is not covering much yet...I got a new pumpthis year too..I love my pond and will try anything...Thanks
It is kidney shaped with the shallow end being 1 and 1/2 feet deep and the deep being 3 feet deep. Oh when I checked at lunch the temp was 75 in my pond it is 85 here in Kosciusko, MS

Ok I remember now. Thanks :)
How did you lower the ph?
Have you tried adding floaters like water lettuce and hyacinth to "catch" and use up some of the algae?
Have you tried adding barley bails or liquid barley to the pond?

I believe her pH was too low so she added sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) to raise it.
My algae page at
http://www.fishpondinfo.com/plants/algae2.htm lists some things to try.
When it's really hot, it's harder to control the algae. I think getting more plant cover and shade are going to help the most. Try to keep the pond topped off if you can adjust the bad tap water first.
We have the opposite problem this last month; it's been way colder and more wet than normal. My tropical plants are barely hanging on.
