Title: Plants And Goldfish
TommyTurtle - March 5, 2004 09:28 PM (GMT)
Hi.
I know Goldfish are not exactly "plant friendly." I just added a few live plants to a tank with some Comets, but I'm not sure what will actually survive. I added: Anacharis, Jungle Val, and Hornwort.
Do you think these plants will hold up against Goldfish?
What kind of plants would you recommend for a Goldfish tank?
Thanks!

Some goldfish eat plants, or attack plants...and others wont touch them. It just depends. Watch your goldfish and see what they like and do not like. I would try to get plants goldfish like to eat. Anacharis is a good example of a plant many goldfish like to eat.

Goldfish will scarf up the three plants you list. When I had goldfish in an aquarium, there never was a plant that they never ate. Of the ones I tried (about a dozen species), they loved anacharis the most (shredded instantly) and left alone the onion plant and anubias the longest. As for java fern and java moss which are supposed to taste bad and nobody eats, well nobody told the goldfish I had who scarfed it too!

Hi!
I have a goldfish that has been kept in 2 gallon fish bowl for years ( I know, I know  )
I have a 50 gallon aquarium that I want to put him in. My question is...........do I have to use the water filter? I was hoping that with a lot of plants, this could act as a filter in some way. My thinking is if that poor goldfish could live so long in that 2 gallon bowl and I must admit I wasn't very good about changing the water, then it could live in 50 gallons no problem. I know more than likely that I will have to hook the filter up and use it, but I was hoping maybe..........
Thanks!!
~Sue~
P.S. Will it be OK to add another fish.........will they just automatically get along? I would hate to think I was giving my fish a new friend that ends up hurting or killing him! :P

Yes, I really think you should get a filter to reduce stagnation in the tank. While the goldfish would probably survive without it, it would do much better with it. If you intend to add more fish, you certainly need a filter.
You can't really predict how two goldfish will get along especially if one has been away from other fish for so long. They usually get along. To increase the odds, get a goldfish of the same variety. Regular goldfish often shred the fins of fancy goldfish in their zest for attention/affection. Goldfish rarely hate each other; in fact, they love each other, sometimes to death. Most likely, you won't have a problem. Good luck!

Hello everyone
The goldfish I have been leaving my banana plants alone. I am not to sure what their "real name" is, but it looks like a bunch of bananas with leaves comming out the top. They even flower, but i have not seen that personally.
I find if you give your goldfish frozen round peas (shelled) and frozen lettuce (breaks down the cellulose) they leave other plants alone.
There is a way to do a tank all natural "no chemical filters" as I have seen before, with just plants, but alot of research needs to be done. It is not for a newbie. That's why I am doing more research before attempting.
Everyone knows about goldfish that they are pooping machine, so it would be great to harness this energy in their tank and create an oasis garden.
