Wow! Look at the neck on that snail in the one photo! I believe we already corresponded through e-mail so you're hoping someone will read this in the forum and help out. I looked up land snails to try to learn more about identification. These sites may be of some help:
http://www.hiltonpond.org/ThisWeek030401.htmlhttp://www.manandmollusc.net/links_terrestrial.html (see the links for more sites on US snails; where do you live; were they wild caught? I found my own site listed on this site but the URL is the old site which is now dead so I sent an e-mail to the web master to ask about identifying your snail as well as fixing my link. We shouldn't hold our breath though since the last updated date on the site is 2002.)
I wasn't able to find a site with just a bunch of photos or a key to follow so I still don't know the species that your snails are. I think what you think are eggs may indeed be eggs.

The web site owner did contact me with the following information:
"There are quite a few terresetrial sites on this links page that may be of help:

Helix lactea or Otala lactea
Iberus alonensis
(Müller, 1774)
Vineyard snail or Milk snail"

well i ahve found out it is definently a helix of some sort, but it is different in some way, its dark lines are not from the lip to the rear end they are from one side to thew other, like from one side of the head of the shell to the other.....like....

i know hes the younger one im always worried hes gonna stretch himself right out of his shell! hes so nosey the others wont come out while your holding them right away but hes just like trucking right along wherever he is.lol, i never thought i would fall in love with snails as pets, my room has more critters in it than any other place in the house lmao! nwo i got a little tiny mutt lap dog to stay in my "jungle" too  i have my own little world in my room..no one will go in there becuase of all my pets. my turtles have free roam of my room, and i make sure they are safe, they floor stays picked up and i keep it that wya so they dont eat stuff off the floor. they love running around my room though! i will take a pic of it too and post it sometime tomarrow or the next day if i can get on the computer <_<
thanks for helping me out i appreciate it! :)

I definitely sent you a long e-mail. It must have gotten trashed by one of our servers along the way. Sorry, I don't know anything about this mash for baby snails. Snails can really eat most anything!
thumper55 - December 27, 2004 04:15 AM (GMT)
darn <_< ......i cant find anyhting through yahoo search eigther.....i may try google.
well i discovered my first hatchling tonight! :o and now im worried and excited lol.
its so tiny i am afraid to touch it for fear itll just crumble, will the bigger ones eat it? that would be bad.....i also have reason to believe another snail laids eggs  so i am estimatiing on a hundred or so hatchlings. christmas was hectic so i havent been ont he computer thats why it took me sdo long to respond.... well i am going to see what i can find through google.
well okay what kind of meats can snails eat? or for protien what should i provide? i guess to make it easier for my baby snails to eat it i can just mash it up into a baby food   :D i learned some new stuff though, mashes are made with fish meal or meat meal...which i have no idea what that stuff is so i guess thats out of the question :ph43r: so i will just see what i can come up with with what i have :)

I wouldn't touch them since they are a little bit fragile when that small. I don't think the adults will eat them unless they're starving. Fish "meal" just means that they grind up entire fish. Snails eat most anything. You might try dry tropical fish food flakes sold to feed fish. Try to keep them someplace dry in the tank. They should eat those. They contain fish meal and other protein as well as vitamins, minerals, etc. You can also try feeding a variety of pre-packaged foods sold for human babies such as cereals, canned fruits, and the pureed meats. In the wild, a snail may eat any dead animal it happens to come upon but most are more plant than meat eaters.

oh ok i try to nto handle them much at all. i now have found 3 little tiny snails, im very happy my eggs hatched, they are easy to incubate, and the big snails dont give a crap about them being there..lol i found some stuff in my bird seed like wheat and oats ect. and the little cat foood looking things and mashed them up and miostened them and the snails all ate on them some. i actually have some reptile food that is high protien i use it for my younger turtle because she requires more protien than the others, i may see if they liek that. i could mash up fish but i really dont want to its nasty enough to clean them....esp. catfish.... anyways thats off the subject. i also gave them carrots, i will; be giving them some egg shell for calcium seeing as we have chickens it will be easy, should i crumble the egg shells for them or will they do it? i just powder up some cuttle bone and mix it in my homemade mash for the young ones. they grow rather fast actually i figured they would grow at a aslow pace but its surprising how fast they really do grow :D .
i have some gold fish flakes so i will try them and see what they think. they each have a little different personality but the 2 youngesat are VERY NOSEY  i made two troughs for them today one big one for the big snails and a smaller one for the smaller snails, i gave them some salad and they demolished the carrot shreds so they should be happy with some more carrot.
my treefrogs will eat out of my hand as i have discovered today,,,,it scared me the first time since i didnt expect it but its neat now.
my dad is talking about me having fish..i think he wants them more than i do  he insists i will have to have some eventually. i probably will btu then i will have trouble keeping him out of my room even with my watch turtles....they work really well for keeping the birds on or in their cage....they follow them around the floor and the birds little crowns go up and they just stare as they run away

You can put in some crushed egg shells. I don't know if the snails would eat them though. They are more apt to get calcium by eating calcium rich foods. Kale is a good choice.
thumper55 - January 4, 2005 01:34 AM (GMT)
wil they eat high cal grit?
Robyn - January 4, 2005 04:38 PM (GMT)
Do you mean like chicken grit? The grit we get for our chickens is granite so the calcium level is low but I'm sure there are grits (ground up rocks) that are high in calcium. You can try to give them some of that if you want; it certainly won't hurt anything. I give our chickens oyster shells which you can try with the snails as well. Any feed store sells them. Cuttlebone also may work which you mentioned you mix with their food already.
thumper55 - January 7, 2005 08:23 PM (GMT)
ok i dont know if calcium is the problem or not but 2 of my snails middle stage juvenile but not hatchling, i put egg shells in there but they dont seem to care bout it, i put some cuttlebone in their water, and i havenbt tried high cal grit yet but i am worried because their shells are weakening. i am not sure what i should do. another snail is laying more eggs so it looks liek i will be having hatchlings for a couple more months, though. some of them are thriving very well others arent, i am not sure why but i have been doing what i am supposed to that i know of.
anything you would suggest?
Robyn - January 9, 2005 01:29 AM (GMT)
If they aren't taking the straight calcium from oyster shell, egg shell, cuttlebone, etc., then buy some reptile/amphibian vitamin powder from the pet store (the kind high in calcium). Sprinkle this on or mix it with the foods that the snails are loving to eat.
thumper55 - January 25, 2005 01:39 AM (GMT)
ok they seem to be recovering well the younger one is recovering faster, but what i done was crushed up cuttlebone and put it in their water, and left a dry chunk and they eat on it some and their shells are getting stronger, the young ones shell is completely regrown. they are loving their fish food, i lik,e to see them eat their little tiny mouths are so cute :D . thanks for the input robyn it was a helpful! :)
