I personally think live plants are a must for any aquarium. They add oxygen to the water and improve water quality in my opinion. Plus my bettas love to hide in their plants!! You can not go wrong with anacharis. All I do is drop it in and let it go, and trust me you will have plenty of it soon so don't buy much!! One bundle at feeder's supply or pet smart is only a couple dollars! Goood luck! :)

You don't need the live plants but the fish like it. There's not much room in a 2.5 gallon. You might try a small bunch of java moss. Most other plants need better lighting than typically sold on small tanks. Anacharis needs strong light.

only some give oxygen but only go with a small plant so the fish can still swim around freely. once me and my sister got some live plants and when my sister put hers in it fish started to bit the bottom nd the plant broke and all the stems came off.so protect your plant....

I don't think a betta is that fussy, I am sure they would just be happy to get out of the cup they live in at the pet stores! I always just have a plastic plant for my guy Charlie. I make sure to pick ones that are softer and rounder and don't have pointy hard edges. Charlie likes to lay in his plant. Ooops I just noticed this is an old thread, lol
