My 8-year old has had an African Dwarf Frog in a 1 gallon filtered tank for 2 years. In the last month it has decided to stop eating. Acts and looks normal exept it has gotten extremely thin. We have always fed it frozen bloodworms with no problem. We are not sure what to do!
If nothing has changed with regards to the frog's care recently, then I would probably say the frog is getting old and may have aging and thus not eating. A few things to try include making sure the tank is kept clean with weekly 40% water changes with dechlorinator added if you have city water, getting a larger tank, and trying other foods. My page at
http://www.fishpondinfo.com/frog4.htm lists a bunch of foods to try. Mine can't resist live blackworms so try to get some of those to tempt your anorexic frog. I hope he gets better!!
Ermm.. I know this is a little old, but when it comes to ADF's one would think that after 1 year the frog should not be considered "old".
I dont know about Robyn's personal experiences with these frogs, and what other people find on these frogs but mine all live 5+ years so I'm not sure what the problem is.
"Aquariumfishguy", you are right that a 2-year-old ADF would not be old. But, the person said they simply had the frog for 2 years in a particular tank; it may in fact be an older frog than that. Plus, if not kept in optimum conditions, animals age faster and things start to break down. My African dwarf frogs are about 2.5 years old but I've lost a few that died along the way from who knows what.
Thanks for the reply Robyn! And I am sorry to hear of your loss. :(
