My turtle decided to lay an egg last night....what to do? We now know she is a female with out a male so the egg is not fertile. She doesn't seem to know what to do with it. She is very interested in it though. Should we take the egg out immediately?
Also, since this happend there are a few bugs (parasites maybe?) swimming on the surface of the water....where did these come from? How do we get rid of them?
Since the egg is not fertile, just discard it. My sailfin lizard lays eggs every spring, and I just toss them. If you leave it in there, she might break it and eat it. If it were fresh, the nutrition would be good for her but you don't want to train her to eat her eggs nor do you want shell getting stuck in her system.
Parasites will not be swimming around in the tank or on the surface. Parasites will be inside their host. Can you describe the little animals in the water? Are they in the water or on the surface? How big are they? What color are they? How do they move? They could be a number of insects, insect larvae, aphids, whiteflies, etc. All you can do is keep the water changed often and clean. If they fly, you can try some sticky hanging traps. Don't use any chemicals. They are no threat to the turtle.
