Title: Bullfrog Tadpole.
Description: question.

My bullfrog tadpoloe has medium size back legs, that he uses a little to swim with. How long before he will get his front legs?
My other bullfrog tadpole wont eat anything, and is very skinny. I have tried boiled lettuce, crushed goldfish flakes, tadpole pellets, and live chopped tubifix worms, but all she does is spit them out. How or what can I feed her to make her eat? She also is very weak, and does not swim often.

Being larger tadpoles, bullfrog tadpoles may exist with just back legs for a few weeks or maybe even longer. To entice him to develop front legs and finish morphing, you can lower the water level slowly. Just keep enough that he can still survive if he doesn't morph. Be sure to have haul out spots where he can get out of the water too.
Some tadpoles may become skinny and sort of shrivel up. There are many diseases that could be at fault but diagnosis is very difficult and treatment may not work. Aside from being skinny, are there any other symptoms? Fungus often attacks tadpoles. If he's sick, you can't force him to eat. If adequate food is around, and he is feeling ok, he should eat it. My tadpoles liked Cheerios as well as fish food flakes. It's also possible that there is something genetically or inherently wrong with the skinny tadpole, and he can't improve. I hope that's not the case. Keeping the water clean with frequent water changes and filtration as well as good food should help. Sometimes, the addition of some aquarium salt will help if it's a fungal problem. Amphibians can't take a lot of salt but a little may be necessary to fend off fungus - say a tablespoon per 3 gallons. I'm not sure that fish antibiotics would provide any benefit. I hope he gets better!

He has no obvious physical problems besides being skinny. I hope he makes it too.

That post above was by me, forgot to put my name in.

I did another water change yesterday, and didn't feed my tadpoles anything until today, which is not what I normally do. But wouldn't you know it, the weak tadpole actually ate a little bit! It even scraped the tank's edges, hoping for some food particles. And for the first time, I just saw it go to the bathroom, which means it had to eat. I guess there is still a glimmer of hope for it. Funny thing is that it ONLY starts to eat when it's tankmate touches the end of it's tail, otherwise it sit's there and does nothing. I guess tadpoles can bond just like people. :P
I hope she continues to improve with the other 2 tadpoles!

I'm glad she/he's eating!

For a while she wasnt eating again, and she was near death, because she would hardly move for 2 days! I keep her by a window, but not too close, so she can see the cycle of the sun, mabye she thought it was time to hibernate, so she never ate. Well, all of a sudden she started to eat and continues to get fatter everyday and get stronger! Her back legs have not grown at all though, they are still the same "stubs" as when I saw her last november. Do you think that because she never ate for so long that it will effect her growth of limbs? Well, at least she is eating good, so that is a great start. B)

If the not eating was just not eating, the tadpole should continue to develop normally. If the not eating was a symptom of some other physical problem (which we may never know what that is), then there could be developmental problems.

The small tadpoles buds already are moving, and have 2 toes on them, and thats only in 4 days! It is getting really fat, and now it's swimming is improving. It actually pushes around one of my older tadpoles to eat all the food up! I think it will surely survive, and I cant wait to see it's legs get even bigger. As for the tadpole with the back legs, he still does not have front legs, but he has dark spots on each side, and when he swims you can see the legs move under his skin. He is still round, so it may be a week or two before the legs emerge.

I have a really important question. My oldest bullfrog tadpole just sprouted one of his 2 arms, he still has to get the other out. I still see him eating food off the bottom. When should I stop feeding him, and when should I put him in a tank with land?
Robyn - April 9, 2005 10:05 PM (GMT)
You shouldn't stop feeding him but transition him to land. You should include both land and water areas in the tank so he can choose when to get out. The young bullfrogs will spend time both in and out of water but if they can't get out, they may never fully change to adults. You can lower the water level and put in some rocks, branches, etc. so he can get out if he wants to do so. Continue to feed the tadpole foods until he spends time on the land and then introduce small live foods like baby crickets and mealworms. Increase the land area as they grow but always include water area too for bullfrogs.

I forgot to say the largest tadpole did turn into a bullfrog. :D I gave my frog and the three other tadpoles (including the one that was skinny for a while then improved) to guy that owned his own backyard pond. He is rich so at least I know the pond is good quality and not polluted. Mabye they will thrive and have babies of there own. Here is the pic of my tadpole with it's legs and tail, and then what it turned into. :)

thats a nice little frog!

Yeah that exact one was from petco where it was starved for 4 months, had such a crooked tail it could not swim, and was so thin it layed flat on it stomach. The tail straightened out and it put on weight, and tuned into a healthy froglet. But since I gave it to that person with the others I dont now how they made out, mabye they grew into larger bullfrogs. :D

bull frogs arent something you want to buy, they are ilikely to be the only frog in the pond.
