Snails can amazingly live with damaged shells. I've seen a tiny one with no outer shell left, just the inner shell although I'm sure that mini ramshorn died some thereafter. Larger snails with cracked shells may have suffered internal damage if they were dropped so they are less likely to recover than one with a shell that is damaged due to low pH and hardness or other physical damage. If the snail recovers from the initial trauma, and the shell is not fully cracked but just a few pieces have come off, then it should be able to regrow some of the broken areas if kept in water with a high enough calcium and mineral level or fed with high calcium foods. In some cases, broken pieces do not regrow but the snail does survive. Whether or not the snail recovers depends on the extent of the damage. I hope he does okay!
