i have an ADF and recently it has taken to floating on the surface whereas normaly he stays in the back corner under an airstone(working). he does not appear to be bloated.

is he ill?

i keep calling it a he but im not sure what sex it is, how do you sex them?

Male ADF's will float where they may start calling. Mine have done that but I've never been able to hear their call since it's not very loud, and I don't stay long enough. Males have a little white bump in their arm pits or a little back from there which females do not.
