Three weeks ago we moved my two large fantails from a 5 to a 20 gal tank. Skittish and hiding at first, they livenend up, but now seem to "mope" at the bottom in the live plants unless it is feeding time. Before we switched tanks, the largest had funny long bloody type streaks on his tail and I was instructed to use Melafix to help the problem and it is working well. Also, my husband heard that aquariums should not be set up by TV's....I am a fish novice and appreciate any input! ;)

The streaking is septicemia which can be treated with antibiotics. MelaFix has natural antibiotic properties. Septicemia is most common in crowded conditions with poor water quality but can also be due to stress and illness. Fantails may have trouble moving around, and it's pretty common for fancy goldfish to lay around at some times. They shouldn't do it all the time though. Be sure to monitor your water chemistry.
If it can be avoided, it's good to not put an aquarium by a tv. The reasons include risk of getting water on the tv, electrocution, light from the tv bothering the fish, and on a lesser level, the various things emitted from the tv. That said, my 40 gallon tank is right next to my father's tv. There was no other place for it. Oh, well!

Thank you for the info....when I looked into possible reasons for the red streaks, septicemia was what it most resembled and why Melafix was recommended by a local pet store. It is working great.....also being in a bigger tank they are not crowded and water quality is better. I never thought they would get so big! My five gallon tank now houses tetras and what my husband said are t-bones. (He got me a dozen for Valentine's Day! Much better then roses.....) Same is true for my tank by the TV, there is just no other place for it. Thanks again for your answer! :)

I'm glad the goldfish are better. I'm not sure what the "t-bone" fish are though!

tommys right thats to many fish 4 a five gallon tank. the are probably sitting there because of lack of oxygen. to many fish in one small tank is bad because there is only so much oxygen in one tank. also there is probably to much fish waste.
