Title: Snapping Turtle
Description: Floats sideways

Still having trouble getting my snapping turtle to eat. I've got him in a 10 gal filtered, lighted and heated tank. Today he was floating almost sideways. I thought for sure he was done. I've also got a floating dock where he has been basking for long periods of time where he gets almost all the way dry and then he'll get back in the water. When he's picked up he gets really mad and today he actually snapped at my husband, almost got him. I've tryed everyday for the past two weeks to feed him, trying new things and regular foods. Up until now he ate really good every other day. He just doesn't respond to anything, could he be blind? He did stare at the light for really long periods of time. I don't think there are any turtle vets in my area, what could they do for him? Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks

I really wish I knew what to tell you or what is going on. If the turtle was eating well before, and eyes look ok (no swelling, gunk, etc.), it's probably not blind. Move something like a string back and forth in front of him. Does he respond to that movement? (If so, don't let him eat it; it's just a vision test.) Regular reptile lighting should not harm his eyes. He has no other symptoms? I don't have any more ideas. Perhaps you can find an "exotics" vet near you that can see turtles. Unfortunately, I think they probably wouldn't have a clue either. Try looking up a local reptile or turtle club in your area. Maybe a hobbyist or breeder could tell you more if they can examine the baby. I'm sorry he's not improving.

He's still not eating and just doesn't seem to care what's in front of him, however he has improved a little, he's in the water and is frequently coming up for air. It's a funny thing but I actually have kept the light off and he seems to be more active. I'll check around for more info about what to do to get him to eat. Thanks

Good News He ate some ham this morning. He's not blind. I'm hoping he'll improve 100%.
Thanks for all your help!

Glad he's eating! Not the best food for him but some turtles have strange preferences! See if you can get him to go from ham to other more appropriate foods.
