Title: Feeding 15 Inch Catfish In Koi Pond?

Mike - March 23, 2005 03:21 PM (GMT)
Hi
Last summer my buddy gave me his medium sized albino channel catfish(15 inch) because it was too big for his tank. He ate the koi/goldfish food all summer and seemed to do well. Now that the weather is warming up I want to know if I should continue feeding the catfish just the koi food or should I put in meat hunks or something like that.
Thank you
Mike

A channel catfish can live on koi pellets but personally, I would also feed some meatier foods. They make sinking "carnivore" pellets for catfish and cichlids that you might buy. The koi I'm sure will eat some too (you can't tell fish which foods to eat and not eat!). You might give him some earthworms or something as well. I've tossed them in my pond when digging in the spring and my goldfish and orfe scarf them up. As he grows up, the catfish may eat some smaller fish. I've corresponded with a few people who have them in their ponds. While some say they haven't eaten any of their fish, others say they have so I think it varies with your individual situation.

Thank you for the reply. Your very right when saying one can't control what the fish eat. I also have turtles in the pond and they eat the koi food as the koi and goldfish will eat the turtle food. Basically whatever is in front of their faces the animals will grab.
Thank you
Mike
