Its algae time in So. California! Ive heard alot about using barley staw bales and barley straw extract to help get rid of algae.
I went to the pet store today and found barley straw PELLETS by Vitakraft. The directions say to throw 2 handfulls of pellets, per 250 gallons, into the pond - scaterred around.
Ive tried killing the algae with algae-fix... and it never seems to work 100% as well as I'd like it to. Ive tried powdered 'sludge removers' and 'bacterias' that have barley extract in them... but they dont work 100% as well as I'd like them to either.
I was wondering if anyone has experience - specifically - with these pellets.
You can read about barley, etc. at
http://www.fishpondinfo.com/barley.htmI've used the straw and pellets. I prefer the straw. The pellets once wet take on a yucky consistency so I personally don't use them as much but still use some. I can't say if the barley has kept my ponds so clear or not since they were clear before I used barley. I've not used the Vitakraft brand so can't comment on it specifically.
