I have 5 large to medium sized Golden Apple Snails.... They are sitting in a medium sized "habitat" until the pond water warms up. (Just got them maybe 2 weeks ago. Occasionally, one of them will climb out of the water...
It is the only one that does....
Last year was my "snail year".... I had 10 of them and they just wouldn't stop producing egg clutches.... However, since it was my first time having a pond, I thought they'd overwinter.... But, they all died...
Anyhoo.... I reordered these guys and this year, no overwintering! -_-
But, this one, I'm worried that it might be dying... The water is fairly decent.. Not bad at all.. Just changed it yesterday (used 2 bottles of Betta water)....
This one?... I don't know... It has me worried.... I even thought it was trying to come out of its shell...But, it has moved around.... Now, its sitting atop the water just sitting there, while the other "guys" are under the water surface against the wall....
What to think?....

Females leave the water to lay their eggs. Both sexes may leave the water if their pond dries up and travel to another pond. As long as they stay wet, they can live for a while out of water.

You saw the eggs out of the water then? Apple snails are tropical and won't survive the cold. I too had some in my pond the first year (1997), and they all died over the winter. Like you, I simply didn't know. I haven't put any out there since.

Snails' shells are part of their body so they can't leave the shells voluntarily. If the shell is destroyed, they can only live a short time. Your wandering snail may just be looking for a place to lay her eggs. Put something in the water like a branch or some aquatic plants, and she may lay on there.
Thx, Robin!! That helps alot!!! I appreciate your reply!!! ;)
