Title: Torpedo Shaped Eggs

Darren - May 14, 2005 05:41 PM (GMT)
Hi all,
I've noticed small (2mm) white torpedo shaped eggs on top of my water lily leaves. Any idea which insect they belong to?

thanks
Darren

Most insect eggs are dark. I can't think of ones that are white offhand. 2 mm is not that small. Since the eggs are on top of the waterlily leaves, they are probably not from fish or snails. Perhaps they belong to dragonflies which are most likely to lay larger eggs on lily pads. The dragonfly eggs I've seen are dark but they may vary with species. A lot depends on where you live as well. I really don't know.

Thanks for your reply.
Sorry for starting the same thread in 2 places, wasn't sure of the best one.
Do you know of any online resources that have pictures of pond insects, lavvy, and eggs etc?

I live in the UK, and we previous spoke on a thread 'where have my fish gone'. My pond is now coming to life with the warmer weather and I am interested in which insects are visiting and setting up home.

To mention just 2, I can see what looks like sheded stripped skin aprox .5cm (possibly dragon fly?), and also what I would best describe as flat maze like circular objects with a diameter of about 1cm, on the edges of the preformed pond just above the water line. Any idea?

Thanks again.

My insect pages list the web sites that I know about but I don't think they include photos of eggs, just larvae, etc. My main insect page with links and index is http://www.fishpondinfo.com/bugs.htm

Dragonflies leave sheddings of about 3 to 4 cm long, not 0.5 cm which are probably from some aquatic flies like mosquitoes, mayflies, etc.

I get on rocks and trees these cellular mini bee hive sorts of things. I'm pretty sure that they are produced by a red spider here in MD, USA so they could be mite or spider eggs there in the UK too. If they don't have little cells but are different, can you describe them more? Perhaps they are insect eggs.

Hi,
Here's a pict: http://www.mindgarden.co.uk/hmmm.JPG
Please don’t embarrass me and tell me its excrement, looks to intricate!

Well, I'm not sure what that thing is. I don't think it's eggs; it's too watery. Sorry but I can't rule out that it's some sort of waste product from some animal. It is certainly interesting though. Does anyone else have an idea of what it might be?

The water bubble is somewhat deceiving. After looking again several exist but are flat.

Thanks
