Title: New Pond

gizmocrystal - May 14, 2005 08:31 PM (GMT)
hi

Our pond has been going for about two weeks now.

The liner has turned green(i asume this is algae)

Is this always going to stay this way?? Is it alright??

Our filter has been running for about two weeks and it has a uv light. The water coming into the pond from the filter seems to be clear, yet i cant see the bottom of the deepest part of my pond which is about 2 foot 6 inches.

Im so confused, having a pond is not as easy as i thought it was going to be <_<

I did read your algae page, but im abit silly and i need it explained step by step :D

Many thankx

It's normal for pond liners to grow algae. How much grows depends on light levels, nutrients, what kind of animals are in there that might eat the algae, plants in the pond, and more. More algae grows on my liners in the spring but dies back in the summer as plants grow. In my 1800 gallon pond, there's little growth on the liner. The life on the liner is very good for the pond, and also protects the liner. It should not be scrubbed off but removing some of the big stuff if lots grow is probalby ok.

Since your pond is new, it needs time to become established. The UV light is meant to kill a certain amount of algae but in a new pond, there may not be enough water turnover or a strong enough UV to keep up with the algae burst that comes with a new pond that has no established plants and microlife yet. Clear and crystal clear are two different things. You can see through yellow water but it's not crystal clear.

How big is your pond? What is in it?

You probably just need to be patient as it says in the one algae article on my site (linked to from the algae page).

I'm falling asleep (time for bed) so I can't think straight right now but if you have more questions, let me know.

Our pond is 8 1/2 foot long, 5ft wide and 2 1/2 foot deep.

We have 2 lily plants 3 oxygenators, and one iris, and 5 small ghost carp.

Thanks

That's a good size pond. Using my pond calculator, I get 794.8 US gallons. For that size pond, you have very few plants. Adding more plants will help a lot. You also have 5 koi when some experts will say that you need 1000 gallons for the first koi and 100 gallons extra for each additional. Your koi are probably still small and not a problem but as they grow, they will probably be too much koi for your pond. They will also eat your submerged plants and root out the lilies. I only have 2 koi in my 1800 gallon pond, and they do that.

Hi,
What you have is quite normal. Don't worry, it sounds like you're on the right path with the UV light and the plants. They are very important. Best of luck to you. Bob
