Title: Are Fathead Minnows An Invasive Species?

Hi, I have an outdoor pond network supplied with water pumped in from a local stream. After going through a series of ponds the water returns to the stream at a later point. We naturally have a large mosquito problem and we would just like to have some fish in general in the ponds. From reading your site I think some Fathead minnows would be great; the only problem is that since the pond system goes back to the stream I don't want to run the risk of introducing an invasive species of fish into the local water system (I'm trying to avoid that Snakehead fish debacle). I see from your site that the Fathead Minnow are listed as being North American, but I want to be sure that it will be ok.
This is a very helpful site and thanks in advance for any help.
Michael.

The fathead minnows is native to the Eastern USA. Where do you live? While they are native to the USA, keep in mind that there is always the risk of either introducing a fish medical problem (be it parasites, bacteria, or viruses) or putting fish into a system where (while they're native), they weren't there before and may change the dynamic of the system. Be sure to quarantine any minnows that you buy and treat them with parasitic and bacterial medications just in case. Almost all "feeder" fish and bait fish are in poor health when you buy them.

Thank you for your reply. I live in Georgia so that shouldn't be an issue. I'll be sure to quarantine them at first so as to prevent the spread of disease.
Thanks again for your help.
Michael.
