Title: Help! Sick Betta
Description: My Betta Fish looks sick

My male betta is just shy of a year old. i keep him in a 2 gallon bowl which is cleaned regularly and the water is treated (chlorine, cloramine, protection for slime coat). About 3 days ago my male betta suffered deep scrapes on the sides of his face from a plastic flower he likes to sleep in. I heard that Aquarium salts would help in the healing process so i added a very tiny amount to his bowl. He seems to be healing fine but now he isn't eating and his body seems to have paler blotches all over. It looks like it might be fungus but it isn't developing as fast as fungus and it isn't fuzzing up like fungus. He seems to be as active as usual and is getting around fine.

What could it be? Am i killing my fish with the salt? If it is fungus is there a non-chemical way of treating it? Should i be using specific water treatment for bettas for his slime coat or is tropical fish stuff good enough?

It sure is Cory!

It's strange but there doesn't seem to be a reply from me from the original question? So, I'll put in some comments for others.

Salt is a good way to stave off bacterial and fungal infections and help fish heal after injury. A betta can easily take a tablespoon per 2-3 gallons. When well, I would cut that back to one tablespoon per 5 gallons. I treat injured fish with salt, Stress-Coat (has aloe), MelaFix by Aquarium Pharmaceuticals (all natural so it can't hurt), and if there is an infection, Maracyn and MarOxy by Mardel for bacterial and fungal infections respectively. Everything is a "chemical!" The salt, Stress-Coat, and MelaFix are completely safe at the right doses. The others I mentioned can be more dangerous to sensitive or compromised fish but are necessary if the problem is severe. White splotches that are fuzzy are fungus. If they're not fuzzy, they may be columnaris which a bacterial infection. It's often unrelated to injury so I suspect the white splotches in this case were injured areas on the fish.
