Hello,
I am a very new momma of one little poult. It is 2 weeks old now. I have looked for pictures or information to tell me anything about determining if I have a male of female turkey. I am sure once it is older I will be able to tell by looking at it what it is but we would like to know now what we have.
It is doing very well and growing bigger every day! I have done a lot of researchfrom the day the little one hatched in my hand, and your site has helped me so much.
Thanks for any info you can give me.
Christine
Poults are hard to sex with any real certainty at first. Day-old poults can be sexed by professional "sexers" who look at the vent. This only works the first day. After a few weeks, it may be possible to guess the sexes if you had multiple poults. Males often have a bigger little bump thingy on the top of their heads (I can't think of the name right now, perhaps the snood?). By a month old, if you had a bunch of them, males would be noticeable bigger and probably more active. By two months old, if you had a bunch of poults, you could probably accurately sex them. Now, since you have just one of them, it will be much more difficult. You may not know for several months and not for sure until that first gobble or display if it's a male or egg if it's female. That should occur by 6 months old. If you send a photo of the poult at 2 months, I might be able to make a guess. Older than that, and my guess will be more apt to be correct. Anyway, for now, you'll just have to wait! My one chick I hatched, I decided was a girl from day one but he turned into a male and a very late crower at that (not until 9 months I think it was).
Thanks Robyn for you response. It is getting a bump on its beak. That is what made me wonder if it is a male. I thought it was a male from about 1 1/2 weeks. But I guess I will wait and see. It is growing so fast and is getting taller very quickly also.
It is having a good time at night pecking the bugs up, when I let it down outside by the lampost. It is so cute! I only let it there for a few minutes then back up into my hands. It is starting to get it's feathers now all over.
Thanks for your help again. I will try to get a picture of it for you. My computer is having problems with the floppy so I can't send things from this one but I will try to get it at that time and send it from someone elses computer.
