Title: New To This Board, Lots Of ?
Description: plants, fish, algae etc.

:o We live in Oklahoma, first off, which as you all know, is HOT and rather HUMID  . Our pond is about 8x5 freeformed with flagstone edges and patio and waterfall. It gets sun from when it comes up to about 5. Is this the reason our water is NEVER clear? How much shade can I provide without hurting the Iris and water lily? We temporarily put the table with umbrella over there to shade it after 1 PM. The fish, well, we have had a time with those. Our filter leaked one night while we were gone, and all of them died, since the pond was drained, well, all but one, who I believe must have 9 lives, since the minute we began to refill he began breathing and is still alive today. We have 5 goldfish, all over 5 inches, some larger, mostly Chebunkin. My ? is, WHY does one of the Chebunkin fish chase the others, he killed one doing this, I was thinking maybe he chases the females, to fertilize their eggs, who knows, any help on this would be greatly appreciated. We have a great pump and filter system, just some greenish water and some hair algae, which, the Algaefix has helped some, just not the COLOR of the water, I want clear....HELP :o

Thanks, and I look forward to chitty chatting with some of you about this, my new joy in life, I never knew I would care so much about fish :)

"Is this the reason our water is NEVER clear?"

It is certainly a major factor. My pond algae page is at http://www.fishpondinfo.com/algae2.htm

"How much shade can I provide without hurting the Iris and water lily?"

As long as the lilies get a few hours of direct sun and both iris and lily get 10-12 hours of indirect sun, they should do ok.

The umbrella may be a good idea on really hot days. You should try to set up your filter system so that if it leaks, some water will remain. Thanks to a mastiff that moved some rocks, my pump emptied my pond two Sundays ago but because the pump is sitting up off the ground by at least a half a foot, there was water left for my fish. As long as they stay damp, fish can survive for a little water out of water as your one goldfish did.

It sounds like your chasing shubunkin is a male. Provide some soft plants in which to lay their eggs. If there's no place soft, a male can slam a female hard enough into rocks, etc. to hurt or even kill her. I've also had females strand themselves in the very shallow parts of the pond.

See my algae page that I mentioned. Good luck!
