I have a 2500 gallon pond with 4 koi, 1 common gold fish, 3 sarssa comets, 2 shubunkin, 3 rosy reds, and 2 comets. Should or can i get another koi or an orfe? I live on long island and would like to know where they sell orfes if i can get one. Should i just ask my lps if they can order orfes for me?

I've not found any good internet sources for orfes. The places that did sell them stopped doing so. So, if you want them, I would ask your local pond store if they can get some. My page on orfes is at
http://www.fishpondinfo.com/orfe.htmMy four are ~1.5' long. Your goldfish will reproduce and fill the pond up in a few years unless something happens (illness, predators, etc.). I only have 2 koi in my 1800 gallon pond and that's enough for me. It's up to you if you want more. I wouldn't get too many more though. Orfe are really neat and very fast!

I definetly dont want to over stock my pond but do you think i should get an orfe or a koi? I live near a large pond store so i think getting an orfe wont be a problem. How big do orfe get? Do orfe like being around each other or will they fine with the school of fish in my pond? Do all pond fish group together? All mine do.

Koi grow up to 3 feet long but normally only to about 2 feet in a pond your size. Mine are about 1.5 feet. I saw some 3 feet koi in a rich man's huge (100,000 gallons I think, 12 feet deep?) pond! You could practically hop on their backs and take a ride! Orfe grow to about 1.5 feet long which mine are. Unlike fat koi though, they are very skinny. So, for every 2' koi, you would probably need 6 1.5' orfe to get the same bioload or something like that. In my pond, the koi always stick together but do mingle with the goldfish. The orfe very much stick with each other but move really fast all over. The orfe have no interest in the goldfish or koi as far as making buddies goes. Orfe are schooling fish. Just like koi, they look so tiny and vulnerable when you buy them but they grow big. So, you might get maybe 4 or 5 orfe. While you could add more koi, I think if they all matured, you'd have too many in 2500 gallons.

I think i will probably add the koi. I would only have enough room in my pond for about 2 orfes. If having only 2 is okay i will consider adding them in.

Orfe like to school. Two would probably be okay but may be a bit uneasy without the comforting feeling of a larger school.

Thank you for your help. I will probably pick up a baby koi at the pond store this weekend
