could you tell me how to make a natrall tank fore wite cloud mountain minows. :) thanks :)

aqua scaping is your own personality. White cloud mountain minows live in streams in china so you would want a sand bottom, plants from china, and a current maker.( If any one even makes them)

Tommy is right; it's up to you.

To be natural as in their native habitat, I suggest the following:

Fill the tank about half full of water. Using various rocks, make a variety of depths ranging from about a few inches to maybe a foot deep (or as deep as about half of the tank). In the shallow area, set up a small aquarium or pond pump to create some current to mimic a stream. The outflow from an internal filter like the Duetto could work to to create a stream current. They sell stream kits you can add right into a tank. While they're not really that natural (plastic), they do make it easier to setup than siliconing in dividers, rocks, etc. Use smaller sized aquarium gravel of a natural brown color on the bottom. Use plants and small docile fish native to the mountains of China if you can.

White clouds are actually extinct in China now they say.

That is weird how they are extinct if they are because they breed so easily.

so wear do you get wit clouds in the wilde ?

do you think javer mos is a sootable pant for a natrall looking tank fore white clouds, and what other plants could I use

Breeders breed white clouds. Im not sure if java moss is a stream plant you will have to ask robyn.

The white cloud mountain minnows (which I abbreviate as wcmm's) come from the White Cloud Mountains of Southern China.

As far as their extinction, on searching the web, I get various reports that basically they are "reported" extinct at least in the original location but may or may not exist in the wild in other locations in China. I think the reason that there is very little information is because this is occuring in China so there are political and language barriers to cross.

While searching for white clouds and extinction, I came across a site that said wcmm's were livebearers! It also said that mosquito fish were introduced to the Eastern US but are in fact native there.

I assume Java moss is native to the island of Java in Indonesia. I don't know if it occurs in the natural habitat of the wcmm's but they certainly love to spawn in it. I also don't know what kind of habitat that it grows in in its native land. Java moss will grow both in non-moving water and in water with movement. I think it likes some moving water. You can tie it down intially, and it will soon root itself. Growing in a stream, it becomes a lot like the native mosses that also grow in my pond's stream - very nice.

Did you make the tank yet? If so how many gallons is it and how many white clouds did you put in it?

its only a tiny 2 galon tank I piced up at a junble sail. I couldent have it and not put enny thing in it . I havent quite finished it yet but Im going to put a few wcmm in it.

you should make it a 10 gallon instead. Your minnows will breed and your tank will get overcrowded.

Robyn - July 8, 2005 04:25 PM (GMT)
A 2 gallon tank is too small for any fish really except maybe a betta if it's heated. A few white clouds could live in there and probably be okay, but just maybe 2 or 3 of them. It's not very likely that they would breed in such a small tank, and if they did, they would easily eat any eggs or fry. You can't make a truly natural white cloud setup in only 2 gallons.

some tanks are too small for fish. I would use a 5 gallon at the least for even a betta!
