Title: How Often Do You Have To Feed African Dwarf Frogs?

Tommy - July 6, 2005 07:51 PM (GMT)
i just picked up two african dwarf frogs(adfs). I bought a large amount of frozen blood worms and was wondering how much and when should i feed them. The frozen worms are cubes. I read that you feed them twice a week.

I defrosted half a cube and put it in the tank. all the fish ate it so i would like to know hat some of you guys do to prevent that. i was thinking of getting a turkey baster and shooting the worms to the bottom. I was also thinking of netting the frogs and putting the worms in the net with the frogs. I probably wont net them because it will stress them.

Now you see the disadvantages of having the ADF's with feisty fish as well as using frozen foods. With the blackworms, they sink and hide in the gravel so my ADF's eat them at leisure. The frozen foods float around mostly so they get eaten right away, especially if you have piggy fish.

Each day, I put a cube of a frozen food in a dixie cup with hot water, swirl it around, and pour a little bit into each of my tanks.

You can try to shoot the bloodworms closer to the frogs or put the ADF's in another tank. The fish are going to eat the bloodworms unless they're satiated. Perhaps if you feed the fish first with flakes, etc., they will be less apt to eat all the bloodworms. Netting the frogs will stress them.

I'm sure you can work something out so everyone gets some food. ADF's are pretty much diurnal (day active) but perhaps a bit more nocturnal than the fish so you could try to put some bloodworms in after the lights are out, and the fish are asleep.

I dont think i let the worms sit long enough in the water. when i put them in they didnt sink so the fish got them. Would a turkey baster work if i put the worms in there and shoot them? Getting another tank is not an option. I already have 6 tanks set up and i am planning on getting a 5 gallon for 2 paridise fish. I have algae discs for my larger cories and rainbow shark in my 15 gallon( upgrading to 30 in a few months) I put one in the tank where the adfs are and they nibble at the disc along with my panda cories. My top feeders are always hungry. Whenever i open the lid to my tank they come up to the top. When they are done with their flakes they eat the shrim pellets for the bottom feeders. will the adfs eat the shrimp pellets and the algae discs if they cant get the worms? Do you feed your frogs live or frozen worms?

I forgot to answer your original question. I feed my ADF's twice a day. They get live blackworms every afternoon as well as some frozen animal (one of the following: bloodworms, brine shrimp which the ADF's probably don't eat, white mosquito larvae, etc.). The commercial frog pellets go in twice a day (only about 4-6 of them) as does regular flake food. I've never seen my ADF's eat or try to eat flake food, sinking shrimp pellets, or algae wafers.

If you thaw the bloodworms in some warm water, you may be able to squirt them with the turkey baster near the frogs.

i will probably feed mine once a day. i got the turkey baster so i will tell you how things go.

okay i used the baster and every thing turned out great! I had to put the net in the tank in front of where i blasted the worms in. They are frozen worms and they just stay in ht egravel until the frog eats them right? Mine didnt eat them when they were falling, but i think i saw them eat some while the worms were on the bottom.

Tommy - July 8, 2005 01:33 PM (GMT)
will they eat them frozen? I think i saw mine eat some but dont frogs only eat moving things?

Robyn - July 8, 2005 04:40 PM (GMT)
I would thaw the bloodworms before feeding them. If put into the tank frozen, they will thaw pretty fast though. Frogs normally only go for moving prey but if a bloodworm (formerly frozen) falls in front of them, they may lunge for it. Once still on the bottom, it's less likely they will eat the bloodworms but they still may. In that case, they use smell and not movement.

I did thaw them and they did sink. Im worried that the frogs wont find them. If they cant they will probably eat the flakes and pellets i put in.

everything is going great! My adfs eat the frozen food all the time i put it in. Im considering the idea of putting my adfs in my 5 gallon paradise tank. The 5 gallon is around 68 to 72 degrees.

1 just died today of unknown cause :(

Sorry. I lost a few ADF's when I first started keeping them too.

Tommy...I feed my adf's once a day. I have mixed frog food (sold in most petstores) with the tropical flakes. the frog food sinks & they can get to it easily. They wil lalso eat flakes that sink to the bottom. The first couple adf's we got died of whatever also. They seem to be rather sensitive sometimes. We now have 2 in my kids' 10-gallon w/10 tetras & a small pleco & they seem to be doing great. They've been in there about 7 months & have almost tripled in size. I might not put them with paradise fish as paradise are somewhat aggressive & may nip at their feet. Good luck!
