hi there were just baby ducks that hatched yesterday and today i saw this bird i have never seen before and iam pretty sure it was a black crowned heron but anyways it came down from a branch and took two babies is that what it feeds on??? :( :( :(

You saw the heron take the ducklings? That's sad. Black-crowned night herons are not that big compared to the great blue herons. They mostly feed on fish and frogs. I'm guessing that they won't pass on an opportunity to eat other small animals including ducklings. Here is the enature site on them. Does it look like the one you saw? The site says they are known to eat the chicks of gulls and other herons so ducklings aren't much different. I guess we learn things every day!
