thats a nice pond. How many gallons is it? It looks like it will get over crowded with all those nice japanese breed koi.
Bou - July 30, 2005 02:49 PM (GMT)
Tommy - July 30, 2005 03:42 PM (GMT)
really? it looks alot smaller than my 2500.
Bou - July 30, 2005 05:40 PM (GMT)
It is 28 feet long and 16 feet wide at it's widest point.
Three levels from 1-2-3 feet deep.

i tried to talk my parents into turning our pool into a pond... its 25,000 gallons... but they didnt think it was such a good idea.
but back on topic, that is a very nice pond, i only have a couple small ponds, but i still live with my parents, but when i get my own place, i am gonna have lots of ponds, big and small.
your koi are very beautiful, lots of nice colors... how big are they, like the size range, some look pretty big, but on some of the closeups i cant tell. it could get overcrowded, i cant tell how many fish there are, but 4000 gallons ought to hold them for a while, once they get all over a foot long and more... i have 2 little koi, that i am going to have to get another pond for when they grow, they are only a couple inches long right now.
Tommy - July 31, 2005 01:17 PM (GMT)
they are nice koi. i have 5 domestic ones but they are very nicely colored.

Nice pond! I'm wondering what kind of lily raises its flowers
so far out of the water, like your pink ones. Are they tropical?
Bou - July 31, 2005 10:34 PM (GMT)
Yes, they are tropicals. The large pink ones are night bloomers - photos taken in the morning.
Robyn - August 1, 2005 06:03 PM (GMT)
I like the tri-colored koi, pink tropical waterlily flowers, and canna flowers. I just moved my poor canna to deeper water since the deer keep eating it and left nothing but the root ball. I won't get any flowers this year. My water canna is a tiger something with orange and yellow.
Tommy - August 3, 2005 04:40 PM (GMT)
all my plants are flowering fine. Thats a good sign!
adreamer2 - August 4, 2005 08:01 PM (GMT)
How long have you had your pond? Your plants look well established!
What a beautiful creation!!!
Oh.. May I ask... What size liner did you use for that?!

The pond was installed September 2003. It is 28 feet long and 16 feet at the widest point and three feet at the deepest point. I do not know the exact size of the liner used.
The hardy Lilies did not bloom well this year.
Water lettuce not multiplying like last year ether????
Tommy - August 6, 2005 05:28 PM (GMT)
it depens where you live and the temp when water lettuce multiplies.
Tommy - August 6, 2005 05:31 PM (GMT)

Where do you live Bou? I'm guessing Florida with all those nice tropicals? What kind of catfish are the albino catfish? Channel catfish? The hi-fin banded sharks won't survive a true winter so I guess you live in a warm climate or do you bring them inside in winter?
Tommy - August 7, 2005 04:33 AM (GMT)
they are channel catfish. it sounds like the 4000 gallon pond is overcrowded.
Bou - August 7, 2005 03:03 PM (GMT)
Robyn
I live in Pennsylvania Tri Sate Area near New Jersey and New York.
I tried bringing the tropicals in last year with no luck. Just bought more this year they are so pretty their worth it.
I bought the high-fin banded sharks at a nearby pond supply and just took for granted it would winter in this area.
I will have to make arrangements to bring them inside.
I believe the Catfish are channel cats from pictures I have seen on the internet.
Tommy
They are doing fine for now. Most of the Koi are small right now. The Goldfish are leftovers from a smaller pond kit I started with three years ago. I plan on moving them and a couple of Wal-Mart Koi to a neighbor’s large pond before winter sets in.
Tommy - August 7, 2005 04:55 PM (GMT)
bou you do relize that channel cats get 3 feet long and are aggressive.
Bou - August 7, 2005 06:19 PM (GMT)
Tommy
I have access to a four acre and an eight acre pond to put them in when they out grow my pond. Right now they are keeping the bottom of my pond pretty clean and keeping the goldfish population down.
Tommy - August 7, 2005 09:51 PM (GMT)
thats not right to realese a pond animal into the wild. They will die and im sure they arent native to pennsylavannia and will eat all the native fish.
Robyn - August 7, 2005 11:50 PM (GMT)
Try to catch those high-fin banded sharks in the fall. I can't believe they're selling them at pond stores. They won't make it down to freezing. In a rare pond, there's a chance they could make it due to a warm winter or heating but I wouldn't risk it. They usually aren't cheap fish either.
Channel catfish take a few years to grow large enough to threaten your other fish. Actually Tommy, channel catfish are native to PA. The concern though becomes the introduction of parasites, bacteria, or viruses that they may have picked up while in captivity and could spread to the native population. I'm guessing the ponds to which Bou is referring are owned by someone who would give permission for the channel cats to go in there. As long as those ponds don't outflow into a stream or another pond (self-contained), the risk would only spread to those fish already in the 4 or 8 acre ponds.
Tommy - August 8, 2005 12:34 AM (GMT)
i wouldnt realese them. i always thought they lived in the mississippi river area.
Bou - August 9, 2005 02:15 AM (GMT)
Robyn,
I plan on catching the gold fish and a few Koi and move them to a neighbor’s larger pond. Their pond is self contained with only a couple of koi in it. We tried netting them a few weeks ago but very hard to catch with all the plants. The fish were getting too stressed out so we decided to wait till the fall.
The catfish are not a problem at this time. I will have to deal with them if and when they become a problem. I doubt they will grow to three feet in a 4000 gallon pond.
Tommy - August 9, 2005 12:37 PM (GMT)
actually they can grow 3 feet in my 2500 gallon. Thats small for one too. a guy caught one a couple of months ago that was 120 pounds.
