Title: Trapdoor Snails
Description: Can't find them
Chris - August 12, 2005 12:32 AM (GMT)
I have put about 8 snails in to my pond since I started it about 3 months ago. Now, since then a bullfrog has moved in and hasn't really been any kind of trouble. However, I have noticed that I can only find the largest snail as it travels in a shallower part of the pond. I also found baby snails when I was cleaning plums from the bottom of my pond, and when I put them back, the frog eventually moved to where the snails were. I have also found a dead snail a couple weeks ago. My question is, do you think the bullfrog is eating the snails, or are the snails seeking deeper water where it is probably cooler in this hot weather, and the frog just hangs around in different places like usuall.
Thanks

its possible that they eat snails. you could still have them but its kind of hard to look for snails.

Bullfrogs probably aren't going to eat snails. In my pond, raccoons often eat them. Hopefully the snails are still around.

its good that the snails are breeding. Maybe you just didnt buy them from the best place?

Well, I don't think there are any raccoons around, I think my dog scared them all off. But I don't know what else the frog is eating. He doesn't eat the fish so I assume he eats all the bugs that are flying around. Do the snails prefer deeper water where it is cooler and more shaded?

i dont really know yet because i havent added any yet.

I often wonder how my frogs stay alive as well since I have so many. They must find enough bugs. My frogs unfortunately are particularly fond of butterflies.
I've seen my snails at all locations in the pond. Lately though in this heat, I normally find the trapdoor snails on the bottom so you may be right about them preferring the deeper water since it's cooler.
