Title: Goldfish
Description: Is the weather too hot?
EllenR - August 15, 2005 01:40 PM (GMT)
My goldfish are acting strange and I am wondering if it is too hot outside (98-100 degrees). They do not come to the top to eat...they eat when the food starts falling through the water and are darting around. My 2 oldest are pretty big and I have not seen them for 3 days. Please don't tell me I have another snake in my pond. I am hoping it is the heat making them behave strangely. I appreciate your advice.

wow thats hot! it probably is the heat. What is the temp of the pond?
EllenR - August 15, 2005 02:02 PM (GMT)
I don't know what the temperature of the pond is. It is about 2000 gallons and a waterfall that flows really good to help cool it off some.

the water fall will help. is your pond water a little low? if so i would add cold water.

Mine do that every now and then It's just because these hot days warm the water up..they will stay at the bottom of the pond to keep cool. As long as you have a deep in that they can stay they will be fine. Believe it or not...I have learned that fish are very smart....just like people...when it's to hot they stay where it's cooler...lol

whats the deepest part of your pond? my fish stay in the 3 foot deep area.
Bayou - August 15, 2005 03:10 PM (GMT)
The deepest part of my pond is almose 4 feet deep. The part of my pond also has more shade too.

bay, how many gals, is your pond? what do you have in it?
JarrodRossi - August 15, 2005 04:33 PM (GMT)
where is the pond? is it out in the open or in shade...mine is a small pond and the water is cool, but i do have a bell fountain thing. if its out in the open its going to get warm no matter how many gallons it is... our swimming pool is 25,000 gallons and its as hot as a hot tub :)
maybe you could add some nice cold water

This extreme heat certainly effects fish. It's been in the 90's every day in the last few months it seems around here! My pond water is in the low 80's. It has a lot of plant coverage (mostly water lettuce). That keeps the water cooler. Fish will do to deeper water and eat less when it gets too hot; that's normal. Be sure you have enough aeration. I have two waterfalls but with all the plants, it's maybe not as good as it should be. I should probably hook up an aerator. Our power went out yesterday for about 8 hours. One of my precious golden orfe, 8-years-old, 18" long, leapt to his/her death in an attempt to get more oxygen. They need a lot of oxygen. With no water movement, my poor fish were suffocating. The rest seem okay now. To cool a pond down, pump in cool water. Try to keep it well shaded. You can erect a tarp or other sort of cover over the pond if there's not enough plant cover.

The deepest part of my pond is just shy of 3 feet. The pond is in the blazing sun all day long. Plants cover nearly 85-90% of the surface. The water fall runs into the pond pretty good. I had a snake a month or so ago and it ate one of my long time goldfish. That is why I am concerned about the other 2 oldies. When the snake was around, they made themselves scarce. I am praying it is the heat and not a snake. I appreciate everyone advice. Thanks!
