25th of July

Yesterday i made a start i pulled out weeds mowed the lawn and put down ant killer as i think we may have a nest of ants between the patio
I have bagged up 4 bags worth of weeds and dead grass which i plan to either let rot down or will take to the dump.
My sunflowers are doing good they are growing tall but nothing budding yet :(
When my back is a bt better i plan to dig the lawn around the fence area and put flower beds, i would also like to make a rockery in the corner.
I am going to try and find out about getting a compster and water butt, and also do my bird table and house :)

This is my long term goal and i do not plan on doing it over night but hey it gives me something to aim for right :ok:

26th July ~ Today i ripped out some more weeds turned all the soil down the far end of the garden we have only lived in the flat about a year but this soil hasnt been dug over in like 10 years by the look of it :thud: i also dug down one side by the wall,i am going to sort the soil out and get it ready for planting then i plan to plant some little bushes or something there.

Shayla's Mom - July 27, 2004 07:29 PM (GMT)
Sarah, if you know of someone who has a multcher, then you could use that for your soil. It will mix up your soil and make it soft.

~Sarah~ - July 28, 2004 09:06 PM (GMT)
multcher ???

I have drawn out a plan of what i want my garden to look like, it is a long term plan but i really hope it works out the way i have it planned

Does anyone know how big Japanese maple trees grow?

~Sarah~ - July 28, 2004 09:11 PM (GMT)
My Plan is as follows

Far left end in one corner i plan to have a composter for all my foods stuffs and grass cutting ect.

Along the house wall i plan to have a veg patch where i am going to grown potataoes, carrots, and anything that grows underground.

The middle of the garden and middle of the far right end, will stay grass but i am going to clear the weeds and get the grass all level.

The right side of the garden by the fence i am going to dig out and put flower beds along the fence or possibly small bushes.

The middle of the garden is a patio which is going to stay that way but i am going to cover the gaps between the patio to stop the ants.

The far left of the garden i have my sunflowers by the wall, and i plan to plant a japanese maple by the fence there or more bushes.

and by the wall i plan to get a water butt to attach to the drainpipe for watering the plants ect.

and that is it so far :)

2nd August

Need to get some new batteries for camera.

Have been digging over the soil in my planned veggie patch getting it nice and soft and usable basically it is softening up and looking quite good. I am planning to get some veggie seeds in the next few days and some pots to start them of in.

I think the sunflowers will be getting there flowers soon, they are growing nicely :)

More weeding, watering ect.

Thats about it so far.

Does anyone know how big Japanese maple trees grow?

Without a doubt, Japanese Maple Red Maple Trees are by far, one of the most popular ornamental plants in the plant kingdom. People absolutely love them, and for good reason. They are beautiful!

There are many varieties of Japanese Maple, and hopefully by the time you're done viewing this page you will have at least a reasonable understanding of how the different varieties differ from one another, and how to grow your own at home.

For starters, and not to confuse you, but I am going to give you a crash course in the botanical names of Japanese Maples. This information may not seem significant right now, but down the road you might find it helpful, and you will know where to find to it.

Here we go . . .

The Botanical name for a Maple tree is Acer.

The botanical name for a Japanese Maple tree is Acer Palmatum.

The botanical name for a Japanese Red Maple tree is Acer Palmatum Autropurpeum.

These can all be grown from seed, and you can graft to either of the Japanese varieties.

The botanical name for a Laceleaf Weeping Japanese Maple tree is Acer Palmatum Dissectum.

And if you want one of the weeping Japanese Maples with deep red leaves, you would buy an Acer Palmatum Dissectum "Ever Red".

"Ever Red" is the variety, and there are many different varieties of Laceleaf Weeping Japanese Red Maples.

This is what I found on Japanese maple. I wish I had one. Those trees are rare to find here cause it has to be shipped in and the cost ranges from $30.00 and up.

Shayla's Mom - August 14, 2004 10:22 PM (GMT)
Sorry I don't have a picture Sarah.

~Sarah~ - August 19, 2004 06:24 PM (GMT)
Well the wind ruined two of my sun flowers yesterday crying two of them snapped in the middle we have tried tieing them up to see if they will re take but in doing so my MIL ripped the bloody head off of one, i have put it in water and am  that it will take even if i just get the seeds from it.

Shayla's Mom - August 19, 2004 06:32 PM (GMT)
Once sunflowers stems are broken, they will most likely not survive. You can just cut it and dry them for the seeds or give them to the wild birds.

~Sarah~ - August 19, 2004 06:40 PM (GMT)
how do i dry them out then just leave them to dry ?

~Sarah~ - August 25, 2004 08:53 AM (GMT)
Well 3 of my sunflowers have bloomed :woo: I managed to save one or the damaged ones but the other sadly did not make it, i am going to dry it out and try to get the seeds out for next year :)

Shayla's Mom - August 26, 2004 08:09 PM (GMT)
You can either let them dry on the stalk, or cut them right below the bloom and face it up towards the sky and let them sun dry.

Thanx Patsy
