Melissa - July 21, 2006 08:48 PM (GMT)
Gwyneth Paltrow and husband Chris Martin have called their baby boy Moses. Moses is the name of a song Coldplay frontman Chris is said to have written for his wife in 2003. It joins the hall of fame of weird names penned for their offspring by celebs.

Popular names these days are a far cry from those chosen in the 1800s. For boys, John, William, James, George, Charles and Frank were popular names. Whilst popular girls names were Mary, Anna, Elizabeth and Margaret.

In 2004, the most popular boys names were Jack, Joshua, Thomas, James, Daniel, Samuel, Oliver, William, Benjamin and Joseph. For girls, Emily, Ellie, Jessica, Sophie, Chloë, Lucy, Olivia, Charlotte, Katie and Megan were the most popular. Now in 2006 popular names include India, Saffron, Britney, Jordan, Calvin, Jayden, rain and Kai.

In celebland, the weird and wonderful are chosen names for babies. Nicholas Cage called his son Kal-el after the name of Superman on the Planet Krypton. Frank and Gail Zappa called their two daughters Moon Unit and Diva Muffin, and their two sons Dweezil and Ahmet Emuukha Rodan. The Beckhams have resorted to Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz. While Bob Geldof and Paula Yates chose Fifi-Trixibelle, Peaches and Pixie. Paula Yates’s daughter by Michael Hutchence was honoured with the name Heavenly Hirani Tiger Lily.

Other unusual celebrity baby names include Misty Kyd (Texas frontwoman Sharleen Spiteri’s daughter), Geronimo (Blur’s Alex James’s son) and Elijah Bob Patricius Guggi Q (son of U2’s Bono. Jamie Oliver named his daughters Daisy Boo and Poppy Honey. While David Bowie called his son Zowie.
