Title: Superstitions Around The House

1. Seeing magpies could lead to many things - depending on the number of magpies that is! As the rhyme goes "One for sorrow, two for joy, three for a girl, four for a boy, five for silver, six for gold and seven for a secret never to be told.". But if you only see one you can avert sorrow by saying "good morning Mr. Magpie, how's the wife?"

2. Crossing on the stairs is said to bring bad luck. This is likely to have come from the times when stairs had no banisters, making a fall more likely.

3. If you drop scissors, it means your lover is being unfaithful. But don't think of cutting up their clothes just yet!!!

4. Growing Ivy on a house protects the occupants from witchcraft and evil. At least it beats the smell of garlic!

5. A bird flying in the house is supposed to be a portent of death. And if you have seen Hitchcock's Birds then it could bring back nightmares.

6. Do not cross knives at the table or you will have cross words. This superstition is probably derived from "crossing swords"... which normally happens when trouble is afoot!

7. Do not place shoes upon a table, as this will bring bad luck for the day, cause trouble with a friend and probably annoy your partner! It's also bad luck to leave shoes upside down, so beware!

8. To bring good luck, the horseshoe must lost by a horse and be found by you, with the open end facing your way. You must hang it over the door with the open end up, so the good fortune doesn't spill out. Some parts of Ireland and Britain people believe that the shoes must be turned upward or the luck will run out.

9. Spilling salt is said to bring bad luck, but this is remedied by throwing salt over your shoulder. Salt used to be an expensive commodity so spilling it was not advisable, but wasting more to break the curse does seem a little silly

10. Breaking a mirror means you'll have seven years bad luck. But this can be avoided by turning around three times counter-clockwise or by grinding the mirror shards to dust so that no shattered reflections can be seen in them.
