The seven seas are full of strange things and strange occurrences. Tales of pirates, serpents, sirens, and horrendous monsters were constantly a source of entertainment for the small village that sat respectively on the shoreline. It was a growing center of trade and commerce for the people of the village. The community seemed to grow at a steady rate, somehow never reaching a congested height. It was the perfect place to grow up and to grow old. A few noble estates were perched right but the sea, rising high above the shore with tall pillars and grand architecture. Bay windows and balconies over-looking the water were as popular as the marble statues of mermaids and elaborate fish perched upon every stoop. The lightly colored mansions, for lack of a better word, were the most refined part of the village. The insides were adorned with carvings on every wall and ceiling and the most intricate designs of the sea carved into the wood of spiral staircases. In one particular estate, a grand chandelier hung from the front hall, completely flourished with pearls, shells, and fragments of sea glass. The light hit the piece at just the right angle at about one in the afternoon, sending lines and geometric shapes of greens, yellows, and aquas across the pale-colored sea foam walls. The woodwork on the bottom of the walls contained tiny scenes of children’s stories. One fortunate girl had the luck of growing up in such a place. She walked down that spiraling staircase at exactly one in the afternoon every day, just to watch the light show taking place on the walls. She dined in the gaudy dining room overlooking the rolling waves each evening, and each night at around seven, she’d head out to the shore to walk through the sand and sit on wave-washed rocks for hours on end, watching the tide crash and roll with violent beauty. There was nowhere else she’d rather be… But that’s another girl, and another side of the story.

The one I speak of now doesn’t live in a mansion or estate, nor does she live in a townhouse in the village. She makes her home in a small hut further down shore, where the sand turns to sharp rocks, and the tide comes harder and more brutal. Frequently her home is torn apart by storms and brutality, and thus, she starts again. After all, she has nowhere else to go. She’s obligated to stay where she is and remain as close to the water as possible. As a young girl, she always dreamed of seeing the ocean, of finding a cozy little home on the coast where she could learn a trade and sell merchandise to people passing by. She hadn’t foreseen it turning out quite like this. Like every other little girl, she had big dreams of being a princess. Royalty isn’t all that it appears to be.

If the moon hits the darkened water just right, and if the waves aren’t crashing too hard on a particular night, you might just see a figure in the water, with a woman’s torso and a fish’s tail. No man would need caution approaching this girl. She’s not the type to sing and kill for spite. This wasn’t her destiny, nor was it her past. She wasn’t always a creature of the sea, or the night. She wasn’t always doomed to be confined to salty air and brutal weather. With beauty came a curse, for it’s always the most beautiful creatures that can’t be trusted—at least, that’s what someone told her long ago.

Danika sat with her arms propped up on a wave-washed rock, the moonlight plaguing and reflecting on strands of shiny wet black hair reaching down to her elbows. She pushed it aside, blinking unnaturally large black-brown eyes shrouded in thick lashes. She was even more foreign then the tail attached to her lower body. This came after the iridescent aqua-hued scales running in fascinating spirals and swirls up the sides of her torso and down her sides, spreading across her stomach and circling around her belly button. Fragments of stones and gems pressed into the skin around it, as well as where her body changed around her waist. The small of her back was completely covered in scales and tiny white gems. With an extraordinary amount of pain, one could pull them off and find that to be as much value as any other gemstone. Ever heard of mermaid gems? Her tail itself was something of wonder. The span of her body was longer then an average man once it reached the tips of darker blue-green fins. Before that, the scales shown in every green and blue in the spectrum depending on how the light hit her body. Sometimes it was teal in color, other times it could seem cerulean blue. In a candlelit room, it shone a soft silvery green, lighter then mint, and bluer then sea foam. All in all, like any mythological creature, there was no way to classify her features.

The maiden hadn’t always called Spain her home. Ivory skin and fragile curves came as part of the package. Her breasts seemed weightless and each feature on a small angular face was as overly emphasized as her eyes- defined and elegant. Her lower lip was significantly larger then the upper one, constantly rosy and naturally placed in a pout. A long angular nose and gently arched brows gave her character, along with the black beauty mark above the left corner of her upper lip. She hummed to herself, keeping in time with the sound of the water riding up against her soft naked body. Tiny child-like fingers worked persistently to poke holes in pearls with a sharp fragment of a bottle, stringing them onto a random piece of string. It was another night spent wondering how much longer it would be before some fish man spotted her and took her home as a prize, another night spent wondering what the woman had meant when she said the curse could be lifted to an extent.

Great crashing waves, and sapphire depths held more stories than just those of horrible creatures luring men, and stealing children. Tales of mermaids were always forgotten; they weren’t frightening enough. But where fear was lost, fascination and obsession grew. Something about fish-tailed humans could catch the attention of anyone. Afterall, with glimmering scales and yet man-like faces how far off were these creatures from real men? They were leagues away according to one girl, the girl that lived in the seaside house. She wasn’t interested in monsters or giant whales, no. She wanted to know what was closer to home. Pirates weren’t foreign enough; pirates were home. The head of the noble house, perched high above the roar and hiss of blue crystal water, was no nobleman. By wealth, yes he was, but by blood or trade he was far from it. The mansion was extraordinary, beautiful and breath-taking. It was the finest in the village and no other along the shore could come close to comparing. However; it was built with the money from stolen goods, the gold from plundered ships, and the labor of black mail. The manor was the product of pirating, not truth and bloodlines. No one in the town knew the secret behind stained glass windows and wide French doors. The chef didn’t realize he cooked for the wealthiest thieves every night. No one knew. Only the family, as well as past and potential “business” partners, knew why it was such a marvel. A young woman knew, or a young girl, however you wanted to look at her. She knew of the important dinner parties with scarred individuals in the finest clothing, she knew of prized swords hung upon the parlor walls, but most of all, she knew the feeling of bliss out in the middle of the sea with black sails flapping and harsh commands shouted. She knew the beauty of the sea.

Knowledge is grown by experience and observation. Knowledge was gained by hours of observation, staring into the churning ocean and memorizing each ripple. She called herself blessed to be so near one of Nature’s greatest sighs. What could be better than crisp white beaches that sparkled with shells and glass like a treasure chest? What could be more enticing than beams of the sun and the moon shooting down onto uneven waters? Tapestries that hung in the hallway, and murals painted onto canvas and wall couldn’t compare to the true sight that was the sea. It took the daughter of a pirate to know such appreciation. Destiny could never draw her away from the tide, only pull her in closer. Hours upon hours spent seated on jagged rocks would never be wasted in the eyes of a girl. You can’t waste something like that.

Whenever she looked out from either a window, carriage door, or from the soft sand itself, eyes were always searching. They were searching for more. A lifespan of seventeen years had been spent listening to those stories from gnarled sea dogs and gold toothed scally-wags. She wanted to prove those stories real. She didn’t need to prove them to the men from her childhood, no. She needed to prove it to herself. With a wild, and hopeful imagination, Katerina wanted to prove the ocean was meant for her.

As the waves rolled against the sides of a boat, Katerina wouldn’t find the answer to her question, at least not in the way she hoped. The sailing ship was near the docks, tied up but drifting just slightly. It was stationed for the night, as lamps and lanterns burned and glowed. The Lozano family was having yet another dinner party upon the newly purchased ship. The sides were decorated with garlands and banners, bows and hanging lanterns. Senor Lozano walked with a swagger in his step that night, full of both alcohol and pride. Loud voices rang out as violins hummed into the night along with flutes and harps. The ladies chattered, the men laughed, and the couples danced.
Avoiding the couples was the heir to the ‘empire’ of the Lozano’s. She stood at the back of the ships, slender and lslightly tanned fingers gripped a well made and intricately carved railing. The breeze was cool as it whipped through the dark brown hair that fell just past her shoulders. The ends curled in the moisture of the air and tangled themselves together. A golden heart shaped pin held back one fourth of the locks, long bangs curling on either side of her cheek. The pin was dotted with little pearls, a token of her mother’s. Dark brown eyes closed slowly, even darker lashes pressing against high and round cheeks. Shades of pink danced over her cheeks, a constant source of heat and girlish cursing. Full pursed lips of matching hue parted and were wetted by a pink tongue. Katerina leaned more onto the railing, her chest hanging over some as it threatened to spill from a low and tight corset. Her dress was of a cream color, decorated and accented with gold tinted lace. It squeezed her curvy middle, and accentuated wide hips. The ruffled swayed in the ocean air, and petticoats swished along with the waves. She was cold, but was too stubborn to go towards more light. If she left her sanctuary she would be met by…

-“Ah!...Papi?!” A tanned, work-worn hand placed itself atop a bare shoulder, giving an affectionate fatherly squeeze and pulling the girl away from the edge. It was Senor Lozano, his eyes dark and serious, despite the gleeful mood. “Come with me, mija. The party is nothing without you.” A devilish yet handsome grin took place on a rugged face. The small beard bristled as those lips curled. Katerina swallowed, and looked up with wide, stubborn eyes. “I’d rather not, Papi. I like the view from here.” “Come on, you’re cold. Come, talk with the Commodore..” “Father!” Her tone changed and a look of distaste took over in the darkness. “Please.” She regained her composure and flashed a polite smile. “I really would rather stay here if you…” “No. No, you will not stay here.” Being gorged with alcohol, Senor’s face turned red under the pale moon and his teeth grit. “You are his betrothed, and you shall speak with him!” His tone was quiet, yet fierce, like that of a captain. “But Father!” “NO! Listen to me, young woman, and listen hard!” Katerina’s father was never quite what he appeared. He loved his daughter, as she was the only family by blood he had..And yet, he loved control more, at least when poisoned with rum.

The girl looked up, now facing him with her back to the low railing. “If listening to you, Father means going out there with a man twice my age then I’d rather be deaf.” This made harsh eyes scowl, and the previous softness fade away. “I’ll drag you out there myself.” “I’ll jump.” She stated it plainly, letting her face heat up but her tone never change. “You can’t swim! Not in that, not this deep!” Her father laughed a bit mockingly, and reached out his hand to roughly grab his daughter. But he missed. She’d taken a step back when she’d threatened, never truly planning to jump…But the reach startled her and as she jumped, so did she topple over the edge. Reflexes were slow of the aged captain as he watched the cream colored dress hit with a loud splash. The music stopped and everyone hushed. “Ay mi! Adriano!” The commodore came running as Katerina sank, eyes open, lips pursed and dress fanning out into the darkness..

Something sturred in the great black sea. The far off sounds of flutes and violins had come to a startling hault, as had the varying tune Danika was humming to herself. The sea seemed a little more rough. Black-brown eyes clouded over as she gazed up at the moon for a moment, sucking in her breath as her chest rose in front of her. Something wasn't right. She leaned foreward on the rock, straining to hear the far-off voices from a boat off in the distance. She knew the family the boat belonged to, as well as the reputation of Senior Lozano. At the age of eighteen, she'd been banished to the sea for five years already. She knew what the black sails entailed, as well as every foreign guest stepping into the estate. Mermaids were no threat to pirates, instead, they were seem as a symbol of luck and good fortune. Coincidently, a wooden bust of a mermaid was against the front of the family's greatest ship. Danika had studied it's features in the dock for hours, and had thus decided, there had to be others out there. Every detail fit into place. Someone with enough appreciation to understand every detail-- surely couldn't hate a magical creature.

She bit down against soft pink lips, second guessing herself as the sounds of voices grew louder. She'd been careful with all humans this long. She didn't want to make a mistake tonight. For five years, she'd avoided all human contact, figuring it was safer this way. She remained cautious and wary of harpoons and fishing nets, doing her job and sea princess to keep other animals away from hazards. As it was, it was the only contact she got. It was bittersweet. However, there were no dolphins here to help her now, nor was there any way for her to keep a look out for danger. As it was now, she only had two choices: stay or go.

With a splash, the dark tail plummetted beneath the waves, swaying back and forth as her body toar through the rough waters. Within half a minute, she was at the base of the boat, searching frantically among the waves for what must have fallen. She could tell from the fearful eyes of the people on board that it must be something serious. Careful to keep her tail below the water, she dove back down under, eyes glazed over with a thin transparent coat of skin-- There were some advantages to becoming a member of the fish family. Soon enough she was able to see what all the fuss was about, and indeed, it was a worthy cause. Glazed over dark eyes locked on the wide open brown set of the girl drowning before her eyes. She slowed only slightly as she swam towards the body, locking arms around her chest and beggining to swim upwards. This was definatly a first!

It was a different world under the water. Everything looked so much prettier. Katerina's face was tilted up towards her growing audience. She could make out her father, his face distorted and constantly moving. There, too, was Adriano right by his side. The other guests were murmuring frantically, huddled around the two men. What they were saying she hadn't a clue. What did she look like from this angle? She never stopped looking, eyes burning from the salt and brine and lashes sticking together. It was so cold! Her arms burned and her legs felt like weights, pulling her down with the beautiful dress. This is what it felt like to die, Katerina thought. It was cold, yet comforting. She was wrapped up tight in death's dark, murky embrace. Her chest started to hurt, and a whimper that no one would hear came from closed lips. She was fighting the inevitable, fighting taking a breath. Being saved was no longer an option, she decided. They were taking too long. She'd be dead soon. So soon...She wasn't flailing, wasn't tossing. It was awkward, queer, foreign. This world wasn't like the one she knew, it was terrifying, or it was supposed to be. But not to her, Katerina simply looked up with a calm expression. Her heart was racing, and her lungs were compressing. She'd be dead soon.

Or, if she didn't die..would she turn into a mermaid? Maybe if Katerina stayed in the ocean long enough, she too would sprout a tail and dance through the waves with dolphins. If she had the strength to, she would have smiled at the thought. She might have laughed too, but laughing meant letting in water. But, if she was a mermaid..she'd have gills! She's be able to breathe. With nothing else to lose, and the seconds feeling like hours, Katerina took a breath. It was foolish, and stupid, but the lack of oxygen made her drowsy and sloth like. Immediately she regretted her decision, choking on water that burned her throat. She coughed and only took in more of the liquid that was pulling her down. She really felt drowsy now.

That is, until something grabbed a hold of her. Her eyes widened from a half lidded state as she felt strange, soft scaled arms tightened around her torso. Her shock was obvious on an oxygen deprived face. Nothing made sense in the blue world, and she let herself be dragged like a doll, carried through the sea by a stranger's arms. She held onto that stranger as best she could, wondering how long she'd really been under there. Maybe she wasn't being carried at all. Maybe she had a fin, and was swimming away for good....Maybe.

The half girl could tell she didn't have much time. Half lidded eyes didn't even seem to realize what was carrying her to safety. She knew within a couple seconds it would be too late. She had to get the girl above the water-- and fast. She gave a sigh, eyes narrowing a little as she thought frantically. Even if she got her above water, the girl had already taken in so much water that it could be a lost cause. With one last reel around her head with an over abundance of thoughts, she came to an idea-- and prayed that it would work.

Lips pressed firmly against the other set, inhaling and taking the water into her own body, a hand moved up as lips were on Katerina's, gently closing her lips after the water had been drained. She let it out easily, letting her voice come in soft melodic chords, trying to lull the girl into a sleep-like state. As her body toar through the water, pulling the sleepy girl along with her, she held firmly, reaching the shore yards away. She should have enough time now to make sure the girl could breath. She pulled the body onto the sand, leaning over it with her tail still in the water, eyes wide and searching for life.

GlitterNGlitz - December 15, 2005 02:24 AM (GMT)
Mermaids, bubbles, sea horses and coral images danced through her head. This was surreal, it was unreal. The faces she recognized were no longer there, no longer watching over her. She was still in those arms that tightened around her. It felt good, she noted, leaning into a soft, streamlined body. This was different. Who was it? What was it? Her eyes closed slowly, sleepily, ready to dream. Whoever it was, Katerina wanted to thank them for helping. She opened her mouth to try and only took on another rush of water. She whimpered and let her head roll back against the mermaid's shoulder.

It didn't stay back, as eyes widened from the touch of slick and soft lips against her own. She knew they were lips, lips belonging to something strange and wonderous. Katerina tightened her grip on the mystical creature, letting every drop be drained, surrendering into security, her eyes closed but by choice now as she heard the sweetest song come from the softest voice. This made no sense, she thought to herself, feeling the water get warmer as they neared the shore. Sand brushed against her dress until before she knew it she was on solid groud, the waves lapping at her legs, taking her dress with them, and pushing it back up.

There she laid, her arms at her sides and her hair stuck to the sides of her face. Tired, achey and freezing, Katerina shuddered and coughed, gasping and choking on real air as eyes fluttered open. They widened, black in the night, and gazed at her angel of the sea.

LiTHiUMxBRiTE - December 15, 2005 02:32 AM (GMT)
Eyes watched over the girl with more then a little curiousity. She had seen the pirate king many a time, as well as a few maids scurrying back and forth to deliver garbage from the estate. However, she'd never layed eyes on the heir of the future before. She assumed, with knowledge of the family, that this must be her. After all, what else would all the fuss be about? She noted with a great deal of respect that the girl was incredibly beautiful. Tanned legs were full, as well as soft hips and a softer chest. She assumed full high cheeks would normally be flushed as well. The moonlight gave Katerina an ethereal glow, and Danika couldn't help putting her finger to her own lips, smiling a little to herself.

As water was coughed up and let out, Danika made no move to draw closer, only watched with concern until the girl was breathing ragged breaths again. Eyes opened and closed repetatively, taking all of her in now, gingerly clasping a hand over the bottom of the stained dress and pulling it back over the girl's legs, bowing her head down humbly. This was the part where she should be leaving...

GlitterNGlitz - December 15, 2005 02:41 AM (GMT)
"Wait!" The voice was soft, with a hint of pain. Her throat killed as Katerina slowly opened her eyes again after she'd just closed them. "Don't leave me.." She looked at the beautiful mystery before her, whimpering as the wind blew and goosebumps attacked her arms. Wrapping them around her torso, it took every ounce of strength she had to sit up. Blood rushed to her head and she nearly fell back again, moaning with discomfort. She reached out her hand, touching Danika on the arm lightly. Her eyes focussed and stared across at her. "Thankyou." She whispered with as much dignity as a girl could have looking like a drowned rat. "I..You..Me..You saved me life." She swallowed and held tighter to that arm. "Stay, please! Who are you? What are you? You're far too beautiful to be any old girl." The tail was hidden from her view, and all Katerina could see was the epitome of feminine beauty in that shimmering naked form.

She shivered again and licked her lips, tasting heavy salt and remembering the feeling of the other set against them. "I owe you everything, everything. You must be an angel. I'm Katerina Lozano II please..Say something!" She wanted to hear that voice again, anything for that voice!

LiTHiUMxBRiTE - December 15, 2005 02:52 AM (GMT)
She stopped turning at the sound of a strained voice, eyes widening and breath catching. She blinked a couple more times, staying in place like a spooked horse. She wet and rewet her lips, feeling a slightly unhuman tongue running across them. Her hand reached out to caution the girl not to sit up, but it was too late. She winced at the sound of the moan and then the touch to her arm, unused to human contact. Shaking hands slowly pressed against cold shoulders, lowering Katerina back down again the rock, placing a hand on her cheek for a moment. They were still ice cold. She hoped they'd get some heat back into them soon. For an August night, it was bitter cold.

Her head bowed again at the thanks, shaking it slowly and smiling a soft closed-lipped smile. She watched that tongue running across puffy lips again and found herself wondering what it would be lick to kiss those lips-- with the intention of kissing them. She stopped herself, pale cheeks rosey pink. "Seniorita..." Her voice was thick and foreign with an eastern european accent. "Please" Slick fingers through at the softest of cheeks. "I am no angel, nor have I ever met one... Until..." This was so strange to her-- Talking, after five years of being out of practice. Her voice sounded higher pitched then it had before, and she was thrown off guard at how strange her accent sounded against the other's.

"You are beautiful. You owe me nothing but the promise that you will be well now..." Her shaking fingers ran across the girl's full lips again. "...Katerina."

GlitterNGlitz - December 15, 2005 04:36 AM (GMT)
Her eyes were wide, hopeful, yet red and bloodshot. The high concentration of salt in the clear warm sea had left them burning and watering. She felt hideous, and awkward, but..Katerina didn't mind so much as she had wide dark eyes staring into her. She didn't blink for as lonng as she could hold out, easing back against the rock and sighing softly. Though the other's hands were cold, any touch was comfort to her nose. She was scared and chilled to the bone. She really never meant to fall in...Honest! Though, had she not fallen in, the maiden from the sea wouldn't have rescued her. And the rescue was almost worth the trauma..No, it was worth it. Completely!

Katerina was all ears as the mermaid spoke again, she sat up as much as she could, her head still pounding but, not as awful as before. "If you aren't an angel, then what are you? I've never seen someone who looked like you do. You glow!" Her hand reached out again to touch slippery skin, her eyes lighting up at the new sensation of scales against fingertips. Danika wasn't from around here, wherever she came from, her voice was rich, smooth. Katerina new Spanish wasn't her native tongue. It sounded eastern, like some of the traders her father had met years ago. She liked it. She loved it when her name was said. Her eyes lit up, and a soft smile befell stroked lips.

"I told you mine, now you tell me yours. Or else I'll have to call you Angel or..Mermaid." Katerina smiled again, and kissed at shakey fingers. She lifted her skirt up some, rexposing her legs and letting them dry. "Please?"

"What am I?" Danika pondered it for a moment, pursing her lips andpouting a little. She touched her own skin, eyes looking at it with confusion, wondering how anyone oculd see her as glowing "Seniorita I--" She shook her head, stopping herself, only to gasp as the hand reached out to touch fish-like skin. It felt foreign to have someone else's hands on her skin like this, it was almost welcome, and had her forgetting for a moment her place in the universe, or that she had one at all.

"I am no angel, I'll tell you that" Her eyes blinked and lips parted to let out a soft squeek as her fingers were kissed "Please, Katerina. I do not deserve such gratitude" Her face burned and she forced her eyes to stay locked on the others instead of the exposed legs. "Beautiful girl... I will tell you my name, if you promise to find your way home safetly"

GlitterNGlitz - December 15, 2005 11:35 PM (GMT)
"If you aren't an angel, then what else could you be?" Katerina smiled a soft, yet full smile as she sat there, wiggling her toes in the wet sand. "But please, do tell me your name. I want to know the name of the woman who rescued me. It's only fair, is it not?" Her eyes widened some and she tried to look as convincing as possible. Her curiosity was soaring as to the origin of the beauty in front of her, and she didn't even know half the beauty hidden beneath the waves.

"I'll get home all right. I promise I will." Katerina reached out and took a hold of long slender hands. "Now, your name. Tell me it?" She scooted closer in the sand, her eyes wide and eager, her lips parted and smiling in the moonlight. All she wnated then was a name, a simple name to remember. Maybe she would see the creature again. She wanted to. Katerina licked her lips, waiting for an answer.

LiTHiUMxBRiTE - December 15, 2005 11:44 PM (GMT)
"I could be many things" She mused, pursing her lips a little "But I am no girl, I'll tell you that much" She looked into wide eyes, giggling some at how large they'd gotten, fingers curling around the other set of hands. "Good. I'd walk with you but... There are some things I'm permitted to do--" She slowly cut off, looking into the eyes of the smiling girl and leaning in slowly, eyes closing as sticky black lashes touched to her cheekbones. She pressed a soft kiss to the girl's soft lips, smiling a little against them, opening her eyes to stare at Katarina for just a minute longer.

"Beautiful girl. I pray we'll meet again" She pulled back some, flushing lightly and gazing at the other for longer then she'd anticapated. "Danika. My name is Danika" She said, releasing Katarinas hands and diving into the water, her tail soaring up above the waves before all of her dissapeared into the night.

GlitterNGlitz - December 16, 2005 12:09 AM (GMT)
"I'd listen to each one." She replied with honest eyes and grinning lips. "No girl? You're more like a maiden, a woman. Too beautiful to be just any girl." Katerina agreed whole heartedly, her breath catching some as cool fingers twined with hers. "I wish you could. My father would reward you with anything you wished. He still may if you ever come to the manor. You'd receive any gift! Whatever you--" She trailed off as Danika leaned in, her eyes fluttering shut and lips parting as the other set pressed to them. She felt her heart skip a beat, and her body warm under the gentle kiss. Who knew angels felt like that. She stared back with little shame, only wonder and awe. To be kissed by this vision!

"Will we?" Fingers tighetned around the other hand, though they loosened as Danika pulled back. She watched her sadly, her head tilting and her lips pouting. Where would the other go? Where could she go?.."Danika" The name rolled off the Spaniard's tongue, barely heard above rolling waves. The name was said again, louder and with more vigor as the tail glistened as it dove into the sea. "Danika!" Katerina scrambled to get up, racing out into the shallow shores and breathing hard as she grinned like a fool who just found out a secret. "You're better than an angel...You're a mermaid."

~*~*~

The next day rolled in with the tide bringing hope and the prospect of something new. The winds blew gently, and the sky was free of intruding clouds. Sunshine glittered and danced on the water, and large bay windows let in all the light they could. Light was a much needed source that afternoon as everyone in the Lozano household was convinced their little Katerina was deathly ill.

"I'm fine, Papi! I promise." Her voice was slightly hoarse, and her nose was a tad runny. "Oh no, mija. You're staying in this room and you're not leaving it till dinner. You're sick, and I don't want you getting worse. I'm worried about you." The tall slender man looked down at his only child with concern, patting her cheek and giving an apologetic smile. "This is all my fault." He mused with a sigh, shaking his head and leaning down to kiss the top of Katerina's head. "Ring for one of the girls if you need anything. I'll be in the study, or out on the docks." "Yes, Papi." "Take care, you hear? No wandering the house and especially the docks." "But-" "Shh. The Commondore will be over for dinner." And with that statement, Senor Lozano left his daughter's room.

Katerina lay on the large four poster bed with carved ivory bedposts and transparent golden curtains. The curtains to her bed matched those to the large window parallel to her. The windowseat was a dull cream in color, accented with that gold. Golden sheets and comforters rustled as she shifted, propped up against the large and looming headboard. Dolphins and sea shells were carved into the ivory, watching over her as she rested. Dark brown eyes never left that window. She couldn't leave her room.

It was already one o'clock.

Confined to that single space, Katerina climbed out of bed and walked to the window seat, her night gown dragging on the floor. Today was a day for watching the waves.

Short slender legs walked their way across the rocky beach, as the girl climbed up the subtle cliff of rocks below her feet. She bent down some, hands gripping the earth and a random shrub as she pulled herself up, bare feet growing sore against the sharp rocks. The girl always get up the hill to watch the way the light hit the waves by noon each day. It was the time when she was most alive, most a vision of her former self. The girl wore barely any clothing other then a faded sun dress which may have once been something divine. The lace around the hem of the dress had grown dingy and tan with wear and weather as the baby blue floral pattern on the dress was fading. It sinched across a low cut middle and tied in criss-cross with fraying blue ribbon in the back. Other then this, the girl wore nothing besides a little blue flower in her hair.

She finally reached the peak of the rocks, sitting herself down on top of them and pressing her knees up to her chest as her arms locked around her. She was closer to civilization today then she usually dared to venture. Off in the distance, she could see the Lozano manor looming out over the rocky shore. She smiled sadly to herself, tucking a long strand of waving dried black hair behind her ear. She wondered if Katerina remembered anything of her experiance last night, or if it all seemed a sweet dream to her. She almost hoped for the latter of the two. She couldn't imagine what the girl would think if she say her now without her fins. She couldn't be close to as beautiful without the novely of scales and moonlight, could she? She sighed, picking dried strands of grass which were poking out from between the rocks. She hoped the girl had made it home alright. She'd checked the spot she'd left her as soon as she was able to do so. To both her relief and worry, Katerina was nowhere to be found.

A small pale hand went across her forehead, shading her eyes from the sun as she looked out at the estate again. She said she'd hoped they'd meet again... Somehow she wasn't so sure Katerina would even remember her face if she saw her.

It was so vibrant out side, and so cheery that her room didn't even come close in comparison. "I'm not sick." Katerina mumbled to herself, sniffling from pouting, rather than the runny nose she'd been cursed with. It wasn't fair, she thought, how she was stuck inside, while Danika roamed the sea. Danika. It was a name right out of a fairy tale. It was from a fairy tale of a far away land, teeming with beautiful creatures like the one she'd met last night. Or, so she thought she'd met her. Katerina remembered very few things from the previous night. She remembered hitting the water, and being carried away by a bare chested woman..And being kissed by a mermaid. She was kissed by a beautiful mermaid named Danika. A smile befell her lips as she pressed a pink nose against warm glass. "Danika." She liked the sound of it. It sounded much prettier coming from the girl herself but...this would have to do.

Katerina squinted her eyes as she peered out, seeing a break in the aters far from shore. A tail flipped out into the air, and for a moment she thought it was her. But no. The sight of a dorsal fin reminded her of the dolphins in the seas. Maybe a dolphin lead her to safety and she dreamt it all up. She'd heard of that, dolphins rescuing men overboard...Perhaps it was a dolphin. Just a beautiful dolphin.

Katerina sighed and put her hand against the window, pouting and letting her eyes wander. If only she could be outside. "Danika" She whined again.

Danika shivered in the small dress, wrapping her arms across her chest and squinting out more, wide eyes trying to focuss on a far-away window. She sat and pondered which one was Katerina's. What would happen if she showed up there now, just to see how the maiden was? Would she be shoved away quickly for her appearance, or given a hero's welcome? Had anyone seen her heroic episode or was she just considered a figment of the imagination? They'd probably bind her in chains before she could ever talk to the daughter of such stature. She closed her eyes, a sigh falling from pink lips before both her feet dipped into the water and she waded out to shove, letting pale toes delve into warm moist sand. She picked up a tinted shell beside her, the color of roses and ivory. She was so used to little things like this, waking up on the same beach every day for so long, but little things like shells and sea bark never failed to bring a smile to her face.

She held the shell in her hand and walked barefoot through the sand until soft biege sand turned to rough brown grass and reeds. Now she had a clear view of the estate. She craned her head, trying to make out what was in every window. She focussed on a figure way up on the third story with it's nose pressed to the window. Maybe it was her... Soft eyes blinked and she turned the smooth shell over in her hand, giving a tentative wave.

It was dreadfully lonely inside her room with nothing but elaborate fabrics and silence to keep her company. The window was the closest thing to comfort, a view of the outside world. Katerina pouted her lips. Her dark brown eyes soft and her expression was bleak. It was a form of torture to keep her inside! She wasn’t evening sick. Pulling her robe tighter around her curving form, the girl sighed, breathing hot air against the window.

Her gaze roamed over the shore, starting at the end where she had been rescued and traveling down where no houses were. It was a silly hope, but the girl crossed her fingers in search of Danika. Perhaps she would be swimming close to sea or laying out upon a rock. That was what mermaids did, right? Katerina furrowed her brow and whined softly. No one heard the sound.

Katerina placed her hand against the window, stroking the cool glass gently. As her fingers curled and her eyes narrowed, she spotted something—someone. Someone was on the beach but..Not /just/ someone. The girl’s eyes widened and her lips parted. Could it be? They were waving toward her! Katerina giggled softly and began to wave her hand frantically. It had to be..It must have been..Danika??

{It's not that great but, for youuu! <33}
