The idea originated from ancient drawings
in the late 1800s a man named hokusai changed the style a bit and called it manga
in the 1910s japanese cartoons were first made that ran about 5 minutes
in the 50s osamu tezuka was inspired by walt disneys creations that he made one himself with a different style of drawing and animation and created the first successful anime astro boy.

After astro boy became the first succsesful anime Lupin arose to takes its place in 1972, this marked a new form of anime, and it opened doors for shows that did not have a purely action style, in 1988 the the film akira was released, this era is known as the golden age of anime, akira to this date is still considered the most remarkable piece of animation ever created, with a frame rate higher then the human eye can intake, and without the use of computers (ie every frame is drawn)
In the early 90's and mainly 92 anime grew, DBZ, and Yu Yu Hakusho were released and become two of the biggest shows ever, after that DBZ spread to Europe and eventualy america where it has become the staple for anime (however much I dislike it, it is true) as time went by shows became more complex, and used more CG, production value rose and you eventualy get what you see before you today, shows like bebop, samurai champloo, last exile, evangelion and what not.
However even with higher production values, better voice actors, and the updates use of CG, the mid to late 80's is still considered the golden age of anime, when the artform was at its peak.
Anime has become one of the very popular in recent years, since about 1988 when akira was released anime has been on the rise, more and more comes out each year, and it shows no sign of slowing down.
