I know this, I did it something like this, say there are about 400 shows, movis, shorts, and other forms of anime released a year, and anime has been going on for nearly 50 years (and for about 25 years it has been going on as a popular artform) so if you average it out then its about 16-20k, granted I am probebly off by a few thousand but thats just an average.

Answer - A lot.
Although not as good an answer as Next Gen Cowboy, it's still quite reasonable that A LOT of Anime exist. Especially counting the newly released and soon-to-be released possibly coming out this/next/in a couple years.
With that said, I pretty much agree with Gen.

yeah, alot of those get realesed, I am also including things like digi cahrat which is a comercial in japan that is actually labeled as anime, is it technically has a story and characters that have roles, I belive it is 16 2 minute episodes, from what I have seen there are more of those then just digi charat. My numbers may be skwed (that is why I gave you a 33.33% radius for the shows, the legal amount for dat to be valid according to some crack pot scietist somewhere)
Really it would be immposible to count every show up especily as many shows have multiple names, and how do you count OVA's, etc, etc, etc.
I think the answer alot is as god as you are gonna get (wish I thought of it first)
