Title: Power familiar

Kawazu - July 22, 2009 08:17 PM (GMT)
Quick question. I'm building a army list, and I got a doubt.
The power familiar rules say:

The familiar adds one power dice to its owner's pool during each friendly magic phase

What it's meaning with "its owner"? The sorcerer or the player?
In other words, does the dice go to the common pool (= 2 PD + 1 for the familiar) or to the dices available only to the sorcerer bearing the familiar?
If the second option it's true, I'm going to switch it for the Book od secrets...

I couldn't find any FAQ concerning it, so thanks to whoever could help me! :)

No book with me for the exact quote, but I'm sure that those should be pool dice.

Sometimes I play 'owner' means character, sometimes I play it means me.

Generally my opponents are cool if I say, 'hey I wrote my list with this interpretation in mind, is it okay if we play it that way? If not I can always pull out another army? *nods at VC collection*'

Hey Kawazu,

I'm a WoC player and it seems to me that it goes to the general pool. Sorcerers don't have pools, they just have power dice. If it were restricted, the rule should read something like "add one dice [sic] to the owning sorcerer's power dice each turn." BRB 106 only discusses power dice pools as the general pool.

Further, a pool is necessarily shared, since it is a noun that means, in this instance "a combination of resources, funds, etc., for common advantage."

This last bit assumes a great deal about GW, e.g. that they actually know the meaning of all the words in their books (they don't, as a few examples attest); thus regarding intent, who knows... but as it's written, the power die goes in the pool: it's hardly a game breaker, so I'd be surprised if anyone challenged it. If they do, then BRB 106 them, and point out that the only "pool" is the general pool.

Cheers.

Thank you guys for the super fast replies :)

daftgor, that's a really sneaky method ;)

alkibiades, thanks for the explanation :)
my mother language isn't english, but that's really clear; though I'm wondering if mr Kelly is aware of this definition, hehehe

I think I'm gonna ask my opponent first anyway, so there'll be no room for arguing about it ;)

in warhammer there is always room for arguing, its the unofficial phase!

Agree that it goes to the overall dice pool so that anyone can use it (except for Beastmen of course).

Good call Alkibiades. Because it specifies pool, it goes in the general pool (unless the item/ability specifies that only the caster can use them).

I'm glad the question came up; I hadn't looked very closely at the Power Familiar, so I assumed it was sorcerer-only. It's a little more useful as a pool item.

Thanks Kawazu, for bringing this up.

Cheers.
