Title: Capturing standards question.

A few days ago I was playing a game and this odd situation came up. His unit of Longbeards had full command and a Thane BSB in it. After a few rounds of combat my unit of Minotaurs were able to kill off all the Longbeards (needing a 3 on leadership to stay in combat at one point and getting it!). Now since I did not allocate any attacks against his Thane, he was the last model in the unit to be standing, and broke do to outnumbering-fear-causing.

Now I know I captured the BSB banner, but my question is, since technically the Thane was still in the unit at the end of that round of combat ... does that mean the unit of longbeards fled and I captured their standard as well? Or since the longbeards were completely destroyed in combat could I not capture their standard when the unit (or Thane rather) fled?

Tricky question IMO.

P.S. The Longbeard standard was the difference between a draw and a marginal victory for the beasts! We just rolled off at the end since it was close, 1-3 and I got the standard, 4-6 and I didn't. Rolled a 2 so I got the standard and the marginal victory, but am still curious to see if it was legit.

Standards are automatically captured if you destroy a unit which you did.

The Battle Standard is abit different though, if you kill him and his unit doesnt flee you don't capture it.

For unit banners - Page 80 - you have to pursue the broken / fleeing unit to capture the banner OR if you completly destroy the unit (in this case the long beards) in HTH.

For BSB banners - Page 83 - you have to break him (and pursue) or kill him out right - just as you would a unit.

But if u kill Battle Standard and his unit doesn't flee you don't capture it remember.

to capture a standard you would have to kill the entire unit in the same round of combat.

So in this case you would capture both standards.

However if the Thane BSB had stayed in combat for one further turn, you would have failed to either pursue the unit or have completely destroyed it and the standard would be lost. You could still get the BSB banner in the next round of combat though. This is why it is sometimes beneficial to remove the standard before the champion if you think it has a chance to stick around for another turn. Ie stubborn units etc.
