A friend asked if a Shaggoth Champion could join units. Herdstone search is down ATM, so I'm asking for a little insight here.

No as it's a monstrous character such as the great unclean one or keeper of secrets...

You used to be able to, but recent FAQs redefined monstrous characters. One of the things attributed to them is that they can't join units.
