Title: Army Generals

Okay, so I have been playing Fantasy for about 2 years solidly since I got back into the game including about 15 tournaments now and never ever had this come up before.
I submitted a list for a tournament and was told that I have to state which Herald in my Daemon army is my general when submitting it.
I always thought you could choose which model was the General at the start of the game, as long as its got the highest LD? Seeing as Heralds are all the same LD, I figured I'd just pick and choose depending on what I need them to do in the game... Not such an issue with my current army, but I've been picking and choosing between my Daemon Prince and another Herald between games all year when I've used a DP...
As I write this it occurs to me that any one off game, I may as well have written a new list, but I guess a tournament is a slightly different situation.
So has this ever come up before, and have I been technically cheating at every tournie?  Do you have to choose the general when you write the list?

I think that having one and the same general throughout the tourny is the usual way to do it, yes. I just submitted my list to a tournament next week, and I noted down whom my general was at least.

I've always made lists with a fixed general. In most lists there isn't much choice, but IMO the general's a part of the list, unless you're following the now defunct intrigue at the court rules.

I'd say it's up to the tournament organisers.

I know when playing beasts chosing the general is what defines the army. I don't know if it is another BoC nerf rule or it applies to every army, but I always have in mind which model I want to be general when I compose my list.

To me it usually is a question of equipping the general correctly. In most cases making sure he is well protected. So swapping general isn't something I'd be doing.
I must say General is one of things written down on the roster so essentially remains unchanged for a tournament for example. I would expect that at least.

I've always had a fixed general as well - normally the guy I want to have survived the game.

It makes sense that they are requiring you to name the general on the list and have you use the list exactly for the entire tournament. I never heard of switching generals between games in a tournament.

Im with meals on this one. I pick my general on a game to game basis, not fixed with the army list. The only tournaments I have played in are local ones and I will pick my general based on what army i am playing against and what the terrain looks like.
For being in the hobby for 10 years, I think it is about time to dive into bigger tournaments.

Ok so I am just looking through my Orc & Goblin book now and it says in the Choosing an Army section on Pg 47:

When one or more characters have the same (and highest) leadership, choose one to be the general at the start of the battle.
|
So I think I may actually be correct....
Not sure if other army books say the same thing though. I can see the Beasts book differing due to the whole General + Marks issue

Well, that may very well be so, but the game and it's rules isn't designed for tournament play, I'm sure, but for single battles. And as most if not all tournaments require that the same list is used throughout the whole thing, I think very few TO's would allow a change of general - the choice of general is a part of the list, after all... But, as adamljung says, it's entirely up to the TO's, as it's appearantly and naturally not covered by any rules...
EDIT: Although I can see there being a good point to your argument...especially if considering other things, like what lore a wizard can use, if having a few to choose between... Never thought about that, actually. Is a Fire Wizard forced to stay one all the tournament, or can he choose for each game...?

There's nothing in the BRB rules (nor in ANY rules pack I've ever played in) that requires you to nominate your general before the event.
But as always it's always TO's discretion.

I'm with gjnoronh on this one. I wouldn't say you cheated in the other tournies you played since it wasn't required by the TO's. Look at it this way; it's just a different tournie with different rules.
