Title: Template waepons on monsterous mounts
Description: Who gets hit

Octavinious - August 29, 2009 03:37 AM (GMT)
I did read the comments on chariots but not sure if it applied to monsters.

I had an incident last night where my hellcannon sores a hit on a dragon with the DE lord. The cannon misfires and rolls a 6, so I go to resolve at S10.

Is the hit randomised against the rider and dragon or do all models under the template take a hit?

As it was we randomised and I hit the lord. He has this pendant that works like a ward save at the strength of the hit. Thus at 10 he auto saves. Not bad for 35 points of pendant. Can not remember what it was called.

Later, I breath, weapon the handlers of the hydra with my dragon and he makes me take the breath waepon against the hydra. I was sure that this is not a randomised shooting attack, thus, should have hit the handers. Was this correct?

Just out of interest it was a monster mash with the DE having 4 terror causers and the WoC having three. We agreed on no bolt throwers at the outset. I must say the chaos giant with MoS absolutely rocks.

Cheers

I'm pretty sure you played the hellcannon thing correctly, the hit should be randomized just like any other shooting attack.

Breath weapon is different though, EVERY model touched takes a hit so it shouldn't have been randomized.

You played both things wrong ;)

Agree, even if the hellcannon template was partially covering the dragon base, both monster and rider take a hit on 4+.

About the hydra, if you were able to see the handlers (I assume yes) it was perfectly legal to target them.

Looks right to me, off the top of myhead. Multipart single models need to have their template shooting hits randomized. Multi model units do not.

a multiple part model is still only one model. As such it only gets hit once and you must randomise to see which part of the model is hit.

If you use a weapon or spell that uses a template against a ridden monster, all the riders and the mount are automatically hit if the monster's base is entirely covered by the template, and all can be hit on a 4+ if the monster's base is only partially covered (roll separately for each. If the hole in the centre of the round template is on the monser's base, randomise if the rider or the mount is hit by the higher strength hit as you would for a hit from normal shooting.

Pretty clear how it works from that passage. Template vs stegs = pwn.

Well there you go. Hit all or randomize based on how much the template covers, more or less. Half and half in a way.

The Hydra is a different matter as all shooting hits must be taken by the hydra, the beastmasters would not normally be hit by any shooting attacks.

Only when it comes to randomizing. Hydras special rule donīt save the beastmasters from templates, since templates hit what is under the template.

You can't auto save. The Pendant always fails on a roll of 6 just like a 1+ save always fails on a 1.
