If the spell can affect any unit, then the MR applies, always the highest.

I thought this was FAQ'ed, no magic resistance against template spells...

The important thing though is that with that specific DE spell it sort of isn't quite following the rules due to the wording of the spell itself. It is not the template that does it. Pit of Shades can be MRed. Cleansing Flare, Comet of Cassandora and Drain Life cannot. Pit of Shades targets a unit. "...can be cast on any unengaged enemy unit..." it clearly "targets" a unit. So it would really matter where you place the template you are targeting the unit. I think the thing with Black Horror is that you need to dispel before checking range. Ie you do not place the template until after dispelling or not, so you won't know if you could use MR or not and that seems to mean you can't use MR. As a hypothetical example if Black Horror said "place template on any unit within 18" then it could be MRed. The other spells mentioned target the table top or just all or any units within a certain range. What players call Area of Effect spells. Wind of Undeath or whatever in the VC book "affects" ALL units on the table and cannot be dispelled.

Agree that it the spell / item has to target the unit for MR to kick in. Used to be great to keep a unit of fleshhounds on the table for MR3 against things like the TK casket - but apparently that is not the case anymore.
