Title: 2250 Necrarch Vampire Counts
Description: tournament next weeek

Hruggek - December 9, 2005 05:02 PM (GMT)
HEROES:
Mordecai - Necrarch Vampire Lord - 430 Pts
Necrarch; General; Level 3 Wizard
Biting Blade [10]
Crown of the Damned [35]
Black Periapt [15]
Forbidden Lore [15]
Unholy Cynosure [20]
- army general needs to be strong but still capable of killing many opponents
- Biting Blade is here because of the lack of points and because he will wound most of his opponents on 2+ anyway but the save modifer will be like he has S6
- Crown is for great protection and for the fluff reasons too (Necrarchs are insane)
- the bloodlines are for the protection vs. miscast and to grant him extra spell (very handy) and the Black Periapt is a must in any VC army

Wight Lord Ver - 116 Pts
Heavy Armour; Shield
Cursed Book [50]
- if placed in Grave Guard many opponents might think he has Sword of Kings in a unit that might have Banner of Barrows so will not try to engage him
- Cursed Book is to nullify the superior WS of many opponents (great Item!)
Chicha (Necromancer) - 150 Pts
Magic Level 2
Dispel Scroll [25]
Book of Arkhan [25]
- some extra magic protection and Vannhel's Bound Spell are the combo that is pretty vanilla
CORE:
3 * 5 Dire Wolves - 150 Pts
- warmachine hunting, lone character catching, enemy redirecting multirole unit that has its place in any competitive VC Army
3 * 6 Ghouls - 144 Pts
- one of the best (if not the best) skirmishing unitsin the game that is great for protecting expensive troops (Knights and Grave Guard) from enemy shooting for the first round or to threat any weaker foot unit
18 Skeleton Warriors - 223 Pts
Spear; Light Armour; Shield; Standard; Musician; Champion
- Vampire's guard, they are first on the list of boosting in numbers
- equipped to the teeth for all kinds of opponents

23 Zombies - 153 Pts
Standard; Musician
- tactical unit that is secont to be boosted in numbers also guarding the Necromancer
12 Zombies - 72 Pts
- another unit that has great tactical value; it can be raised to be nasty threathning rank and file unit or redirecting, flank protecting unit
SPECIAL:
10 Black Knights - 335 Pts
Barding; Lance; Heavy Armour; Shield; Standard; Musician; Champion
Banner of the Barrows [45]
- hammer of the army and my strongest unit to give punishment to my enemy
20 Grave Guard - 315 Pts
Heavy Armour; Shield; Standard; Musician; Champion
War Banner [25]
- hammer of the army but in more defensive manner; it can sustain much damage and still hit so it hurts.
- with Wight Lord included, psychologycal effect of my opponents should be that this Unit should be avoided and that it is more dangerous than it acctually is

2 * 4 Fell Bats - 160 Pts
- everything what the Dire Volves are and some more...

Casting Pool: 7
Dispel Pool: 5

Total Army Cost: 2248

What do you say? Is this type of list competitive enougt by your standards?
I took Necrarch because every other tournament Vampires are either Strigoi or von Carsteins. It might be interesting...

I really like your units, very nice selection. although I dont use black knights in those numbers but thats a matter of personal taste. my worry here is that while you play necrarch that is supposed to be pretty strong on the magical front, your magic really isnt that impressive. 7PD arent really that much these days, sure you can save some in the black periapt, but still. I have more PD and I play strigoi ;)

I would take a count instead of a lord for many reasons. he is cheaper and still dead hard. also you really would need that extra hero slot for an additional necromancer to boost the magic phase. I also dont trust magic that much that I take small units and raise them afterwards, I take the size of units that I want from the start (24 for me, 23 if characters go in there). I also really hope that you deploy your units only 4 wide ;) (except maybe graveguards).

but as said, units look good but you should tweak your characters a bit.

The Lord is the choice because it still has 5 Attacks and grants me 2 DD. Stupidity on Ld 10 is very different story than on Ld 9.
Also I think he saves more points than Count - my opponent gains half of his points for inflicting 3 Wounds while for the same amount of damage my Count would be dead; not to mention other dead of crippled units due to the Slain General rule.

The fact is that I must be within limitations for my PD (every PD over 7th is -1) so I still have -2 (1 for Book of Arkhan and 1 for Periapt). The rules for the tournament were on this forum.

4 wide is my choice too. GG are 5 allways and Skeletons most of the time (because I can still have FC and both Wight Lord and Vampire in the front rank).

Gorash - December 9, 2005 05:38 PM (GMT)
oooh, ok then the PD thing is solved then :) that is kinda what I dont like with Necrarchs, they are quite vulnerable. but as your magic works the way it does then I suppose the Lord is ok :) other than that, a very nice list.

Hey Hruggek,

I also play Necrarch VC aside from my BoC. I think your list looks fine as is. You've thought out your battle plan and the purpose for each of your units. Looks like a solid competitive list to me.

Personally I like fielding a Vampire Count as Gorash suggested, but I understand your reasons for taking a Lord.

Good luck in the tourney! :D

Cheers,
V.

I think it looks good. As said before, 7 PD is pretty weak for necrach's, but if it's to save on comp points I can understand. Personally, I've never loved grave gaurd, they almost always seem to either get shot up or destroyed by something more powerful.

Aside from that, both are more personal preferences, you seem extremely light on troops. With only 7 power dice you will struggle to raise many troops, not nearly enough needed to beef up those units to an acceptable level. I'd try to find more points for zombies.

I tought the same thing but during my test games I proved that I can raise more than enough. For example - I have Character with 4 spells - Raise the Dead, Hellish Vigour, Gaze of Nagash and Curse/Vanhel's Danse.
With 7 dice in my first round i can raise (or try to) as my first spell with my Vampire on 7+ using 2 dice (note +1 to cast). Great chances to succeed and that gives me on average 7 Skeletons or 9 Zombies. My opponent will pass my casting knowing that I have 5 more dice and great arsenal of deadly spells.

I can allways throw 4 dice to cast raise on 11+ and hope for the best (everything but miscast) with average roll of 15! That would be done if my Necromancer used 2 dice to cast on 3+ to gain d6/d6+1 of Skeletons/Zombies. And I still get to keep one dice for my Dispel Dice total in opponent's phase.

Sounds good, it always helps to have a good plan of how to use your dice. With the periphat you should get 8 PD too. Remember, the black periphat can steal the opponents dice as well as save your own!

Tomorrow is the tournament so I can see what my army is made of...

Vaprak - December 16, 2005 02:22 PM (GMT)
Good luck! Kill them all... :P

Let us know how it goes.

Hruggek - December 17, 2005 08:40 PM (GMT)
3 games behind me and I have score of 57 points out of 60 (2x massacre, 1 solid victory) against High Elf, Orcs & Goblins and Lizardmen.

The first game tomorrow will be against Lizardmen too....

Could be worse... ;)

Vaprak - December 17, 2005 10:01 PM (GMT)
So far, so good. Keep up the good work Hruggek! :D

Daggoth - December 21, 2005 05:53 AM (GMT)
Pretty impressive, you couldn't ask for a better run without wanting perfection really. Hopefully you're getting the feel for the list, and you'll do even better the next round.

Jhaantikaal - May 5, 2006 04:48 PM (GMT)
What happened then???
:D

Daggoth - May 6, 2006 04:13 AM (GMT)
Wow...talk about a out of nowhere thread revival. I'm suprised by my posts, they seem a bit nicer than how I usually feel these days.

Jhaantikaal - May 6, 2006 10:26 AM (GMT)
Lol, i was just browsing for necrarch posts - found this one - and am very curious to what happened next!
