Having read CountArach’s very interesting article on herds and the statement that a standard should only be included in a battle herd.

I wonder what is the size of a battle herd and should it have a supporting character to bolster to make it worthwhile including a standard?

Example:

7/10 herd, foe-render & musician

Should the above have a standard? If accompanied by a character then definitely yes.

I would say any herd smaller won’t get full rank bonus when engaged in combat and therefore shouldn’t really have a standard.

What are your thoughts on the minimum herd size to include a standard?

yup - thats it for me. 17 is my minimum I'd reccommend there being a standard for.

Having said that my herds are always either above 20 (normally 23 with 2 characters) or 13 strong so its never been an issue which to give standards and which not to.

17 is a great number to add the standard at... Although I have used it in smaller herds, but only in smaller (500 or so) point games.

I agree. All of my herds that have at least 17 models get full command. Anything smaller does not get a standard.

I only field large herds (20+) and they always have full command (unless there's a BSB in the unit).

So for me the question never comes up biggrin.gif

I don't have single standard in my entire army...and I'm not getting one either...I have four herds all 17 strong. I should get musicians for them though.

And I agree with the majority. Anything above 17 can/should have standards. You should however closely consider the role of these units before giving them the standard.

Units of 17. Only 1 unit gets a standard(rarely) and that's if its with a fighty character.

I agree 17+ size units are most likely to get banners in my armies.

I think that 17 is the minimum size that should have a standrad, but then only if you are not ambushing. If youa re ambushing you probably aren't fighting much serious opposition, and would just be wasting 10 points. Either that or you would be supporting a unit that is in the front, and that could have a standard anyway.

For me, 17 strong units get a standard. If it is a smaller herd (say 13) that has a supporting wargor, I will give it a standard as well. If it is a larger herd that has 2+ characters, I include a BSB if I can afford it. If not than a regular standard.

Yep i parrot (agree) that. 17+ standard below 17 no standard, seeing as the standard is carried by a gor and gors go to the front, in lower than 17 modles, the front rank is gonna be all gor but after is ungor, so that after one round, the standard will be picked up by a weaker warrior, hence it aint really worth giving the extra 100 vp's just for the look of the thing lol

It depends omn what I want a herd to do. If I want it to bash my opponents face then I normally have something like it. If a herd has a character at all then I give it a standard. If I spent so many points on a character I might aswell spend 10 on a standard. It is a little bit like insurance.

OF course in small games i won't usually use a standard.

i dont really get what you're saying...the standard is still held up by a gor even if the gor carrying it dies. I cant go to an ungor AFAIK
