So as you could see, Kinki Kids and SMAP are both very solid groups. :lol:

:clap2: :clap2: Well that's a relief!! With figures like this I can only hope both groups continue for a bit longer.

I wonder why the others...Tackey & Tsubasa, V6, Tokio, Arashi and Kanjani8 have lower figures. I assumed they were equally popular....

I think those who buy Kinki Kids music are slightly older people with a preference for good quality music. V6, TOKIO's music is not so easy to accept. They sell because of them being a pop group. Arashi has a couple of good songs. NEWS...it's hard to tell. I haven't found a song I like from them except Sayendo and etc....

While Kinki Kids write some of their own songs, their composers manage to maintain a pop quality to their songs yet acceptable to a wide range of people. SMAP hire very good composers too, and some of the songs listed are truly very good songs.

If you look at the top 10 singles, they are all very good songs. Only SMAP is a boys group.

It shows that while boys band may sell music based on their image, in the long run, the listeners would spend their money on truly worthwhile music.

SMAP always sells more than Kinki Kids. They have at least 15% of the country as its fans based on SMAP shows ratings.

The Oct 8 2006, 04:04 AM of sales this year already show you they are in the 300,000 - 400,000 plus sales for their singles.

Congratulations to Kinki Kids 24th single Harmony of December reaching consecutively no. 1 for the day and for the week in Oricon rankings.

It was said that the first day sales was 190,000 and officially, the first week sales is 234,000 copies.

Here is the chart of KK on the left having consecutive no. 1 weekly singles as compared to other JE groups and on the right chart is other groups which has singles that reached no. 1 consecutively.

While we are on the subject of album sales and singles sales, I have been researching on the topic through various discussions and will recount what I read. Japan's singles' sales is driven a lot by idol business, TV tie ins, CM music tie ins. It sells phenomenal numbers in the past but with the increase of legal downloads of mp3, even singles sales are affected.

The volume that is moved are from purchases from die-hard fans who buy for the purpose of collecting. So Kat-Tun comes with 7 editions, and other groups come in with 2 or 3 editions of the same title and it all adds up to the dominance of JE artist in the singles list.

There are the purchasers who are undecided and if given the option, they would buy an album instead of a single.

There is also a rental business of singles which affects the retail sales. Accordingly, Japan allows the rental of singles after the first few weeks and that's why after the first few weeks, sales decline sharply.

Outside of JE, those who survive in the market are good musicians. B'z and Mr. Children are two groups which do not offer different editions for one single and their sales are truly solid over the years.

While I'm proud to see that Kini Kids have two albums compared to SMAP and no other JE groups apart from these two hit the chart, showing that other JE groups are more idol generated business and fluff, let me say that Kinki Kids may never be on this list again unless they make superb music and downloaders feel the need to buy the album.

So far even Endlicheri didn't hit this list nor Mirrors despite good music. Yet Koda Kumi, Ayumi Hamasaki, Mr. Children, Def Tech continues their strong trend.

Is JE doing something wrong?

Have they milked their fans dry because of the multiple editions of Singles that no one has the urge to buy the albums anymore? Is there something wrong with the distribution channel, promotional efforts, or is there something wrong with recent Kinki Kids music?

That IS a relatively important question. WHY does JE feel the need to bring out so many versions of a single? I think it's draining on the fans, and there really isn't much purpose besides the "I need to own all versions" mentality that many people have. For me, I'm happy to buy one, may I know the thoughts of others?

Money. Us who wants all editions are really big source of money.
Nowadays there's a lot of fans who are bragging over owning all editions, which is the reason everything has to be owned how much money there ever went. <--- And for that, all the producing companies are happy for.

[I myself am only bugged by the knowledge that there will be something that other doesn't have - in other edition so have to get all editions because of that. [Heck, I have 4 Harmony of Decembers because I lost Koichi's wristband and had to get it back = ordered 2 more from CDJapan. =___=] But for me, KinKi Kids and Tackey & Tsubasa are the only ones I buy _everything_.]


Now, this is may be off topic but I wanted to write this out of my system:
I can admit of my parents being pretty wealthy which means that it's not hard for me to get things I want. BUT. What I seriously hate is how Harmony of December came and about 2 weeks after came the album.
Nov 29th; Harmony of December -single. Two editions and price for one is 952yen [at least according to cdjapan. Couldn't find the price from the CD.] which makes both editions cost 1904yen.
Dec 13th; i -iD- comes. According for my CD's they costs 3000yen and 3333yen. Making them together 6333yen together.
For people like me, how much ever I could buy them, counting is sad. In a month [not counting the trip to Japan] I spent 8237yen for 4 CD's from where two are the same when not counting some differences in them.
Now there are yummyness coming from our fishy-san with only week's warning. 5523yens goes swhoosh. That doesn't impress much people who 1. are fans, 2. aren't so patient with getting stuff later and 3rd: whose money situation is tight [which doesn't apply to me, but 2 first does]. I guess in fishy-san's situation like this can be understandable but I wasn't jumping from joy when heard when iD comes.
Oh well, in the end this may be pointless but I just had to whine about it.

If you look carefully, there are a couple of Kimura's drama theme songs on too. Lalala love song, True love, and Can you keep a secret. I'm sure there's more that I'm not familiar with.

Again, these figures show that it is in the late 90's. Only 7 songs in 2000's and beyond hit this list. Meaning too many downloaders unless they are truly great songs.

SMAP did exceptionally well as a group of all JE groups having 3 songs in it and 2 are in 2000's period. Kinki Kids has two songs but they are in debut times 1997. Shuji & Akira indeed is a wonder! Kudos to the team and the movie tie in and the sales!!! And a great song in 2005 - the only 2005 song to get to this list!!!

The last time I started wondering aloud in a Chinese forum why Kinki Kids songs are no longer hitting these lists as in the latest album lists just like I posted here, my posting got deleted deliberately by the webmistress in a Kinki Kids forum. So obviously, this is the only place I could express my true thoughts. Fans are too protective of their idols. I'm just asking a simple question. :lol: :lol: You can imagine how P.O. I have been lately.

His DVD documentary for 2006 also topped Oricon rankings this week.

There is an interesting discussion at a Japanese blog on Oricon sales reporting vs Soundscan and how exactly do they gather their sales data. The blogger summarized the issue in English as follows:

The freelance entertainment writer Ugaya Hiro who has written 3 books on Japanese music scene was quoted in a short interview by another paper of his doubts on the data collection methods of Oricon.

Since then, Oricon has sued the Ugaya for the quote for 50 million yen.

This blogger followed up with a translation of an article by Nikkei Entertainment which objectively outline the ins and outs of data collection. Nikkei alleged that Oricon sales has numbers that are so different from Soundscan that a general pattern could be seen. Oricon sales has idol groups especially Johnny Jimusho's topping the charts when Soundscan which gather data from point of sales and not live venue sales, internet sales has the same groups always lower than indie artists.

Two examples were Mr. Travelling Man of TOKIO and Endlicheri Endlicheri's album.

Mr. Travelling Man was no. 1 in Oricon but lost to Janne Da Arc's "Turning Back" album by 20,000 copies in the same week at Soundscan.

Kinki Kids' Tsuyoshi Domoto's Endlicheri Endlicheri of July 2, 2006 beated Pornograffiti on Oricon by 893 but on Soundscan, Pornograffitti defeated Endlicheri by 16,000 copies.
