Title: Stevie Ray Vaughan

OnLoveInSadness - April 27, 2004 04:21 AM (GMT)
Just thought this board needed an SRV thread and I looked (briefly) and didn't see one. SRV is the reason I took the step from once in a while strumming chords to being dedicated to guitar ... he made me feel music. Anyone else a fan? (I know there are a few). B)

I am! stevie was just the best, I would have loved to see him play live. I have the live album from Montreiux it's a double cd the first one is from ' 82 and the crowd was actually booing him I can just imagine how stupid they felt later on, obviously cuz the other was from '85 and they were going crazy for him when he came on stage. He was on fire,( not literaly of course) stevie doing jimi's voodoo child on that disc is just amazing. so anyway yes I would say I am a fan. what was the question? hope you enjoyed my rambling. I just really think he was one of the best musicians and it's a shame his life was cut short. :(

Nothing wrong with some rambling ... yep Stevie was amazing ... and he also covered Hendrix's Little Wing (a magazine I have put SRV's version of Little Wing as the #1 solo of all time in fact) and live at the El Mocambo dvd has SRV doing both Voodoo Chile and Third Stone From The Sun ... Just as SRV was an influence to John Mayer, Hendrix had impact on SRV. I think it's in the Texas Flood CD booklet that SRV mentions dreams in which he'd get lessons from Hendrix and learn secret chords, but he'd forget them when he woke up.

SRV has had huge influence on my life ... his music has so much soul and it just made a big impact on me ... the way he expresses every emotion through music is just amazing and if you enjoy his music but haven't seen him perform I'd say pick up his DVDs. The El Mocambo DVD will blow you away with SRV's guitar ability ... it was filmed in a small venue early on in his career and he comes out like he has something to prove I guess ... the solos on it are just amazing ... it was around the time of the release of Texas Flood, 1983ish I think. The Austin City Limits dvd has 3 songs (Pride And Joy, Texas Flood and Voodoo Chile) from an early performance at the venue, then his last set at Austin City Limits. The latter is a set after he had almost died from drug and alcohol abuse and had gone through rehab and cleaned himself up. His stage presence is different somehow and he has a new cleaner look. He entertains more, with added keyboard player to the band, and there are less extended solos. It's awesome to see how his face changes depending on the mood of the song ... especially when he plays Pride And Joy (about his love for his wife Lenny) or Lenny (written for his wife Lenny) ... his face changes so much depending on mood ... and you can hear it in his play too ... I want to reach that level where I can get emotionally inside the songs I play and express myself musically inside the songs. Texas Flood is probably my favourite because it was always played with extended solo live ... and in the 2 performances of it that I've seen you can see SRV change a few times within a single performance ... it's amazing.

SRV is my hero. B)
How's that for rambling.

That was stellar rambling right there! puts mine to shame. I have been eyeing the live DVD's on amazon but I didn't know which one was best I mean I'm sure there all good, how could they not be it's SRV. but I am not as wealthy as I used to be ha ha no but really which is your favorite? you probably just told me but tell me again please. I also wanted to get another CD but there are so many! do you have any suggestions?

any SRV is good SRV ... long solos then go for the El Mocambo dvd. There are a lot of extended solos on that, and it is my favourite of the two dvds. It was filmed in a small venue and has a very spontaneous feel to it ... very energetic somehow ...

The Austin City Limits has less solos and is more just SRV's take on the blues. It's blues but more cheerful and energetic. There are some cool solos, that goes without saying because it's SRV, but it doesn't look like he feels he has anything to prove, he just plays. I like this one too. Can't lose with either of the two. B)

As far as CD's go, I wish I could help ... I have Texas Flood (awesome) and his CD he did with Albert King (also awesome). The one with Albert King is called In Session and is very cool. SRV going back to more blues roots and jamming with one of his heroes. The songs are some classic blues, some SRV and some Albert King songs.

I have heard a lot of live SRV stuff by getting mp3's but as far as albums go I wish I could afford more ... of Stevie Ray Vaughan and of other artists. I don't have Any Given Thursday on cd yet, for example.

If you don't have Texas Flood, I'd say it's a must. Other than that, anything is good. Happy listening!

Thank you Gary, I put the El Mocambo dvd on my wish list it will have to stay there for a while until I can afford it. I find it hard to believe we are the only two who like the guy, where is everyone else? My affinity for guitar players started at home cuz my dad and brothers are great musicians I remember going to gig's with my dad when I was a little girl and the funny thing is they were playing SRV songs but I didn't realize it ,so I guess I have always liked him and listened to him I just didn't know his name.
